Guitar and drum teacher available

24-year-old Clark University graduate living in Newton is available this spring and summer to take care of kids ages 5 and up and to teach drums and guitar.

Jeremy Marshall, who currently works at the Zervas Elementary School After School Program, has been playing the drums for about 12 years.  He enjoy playing sports including basketball and baseball, going on hikes and providing basic musical instruction in drums and guitar. Jeremy has a car and would be able to provide transportation if needed.

Summer Strength Squad

Optimal Fit PT announces a FUN and CHALLENGING 6 week program designed specifically for high school students. Learn form and technique for strength based weight training. The program will
1. Teach proper form and technique for basic prime movements used during training.
2. Identify/Correct movement patterns that may predispose an individual to injury.
3. Prepare students athletes to enter into Fall sport season in PRIME condition.

Step-Up Day, Friday, June 9

Please mark you calendars for Step-Up Day,  Friday, June 9.  All sixth graders will be dismissed at 11:30am on this day, so that fifth graders can visit Bigelow, and the usual bus routes will run then.  Seventh graders have a full day and will be dismissed at 2:45pm.  Eighth graders also have a full day.  They will leave Bigelow at 11:30am to visit Newton North High School, and then return by 2:45pm to Bigelow for dismissal.  The usual bus routes will run again for 7th and 8th graders at 2:45pm.  A flyer is attached .

Also, several parents of rising seventh and eighth graders have asked about math classes in these grades.  Attached  is a letter with information about 7th and 8th grade math classes at Bigelow.

Haiku Contest Results

From the Library

  • Over 50 students submitted haikus
  • Haikus were judged on creativity, originality, and attention to haiku form
  • A panel of teacher judges chose three top winners and three honorable mentions
  • The haikus are displayed on a bulletin board in the library
  • Parents are invited to come in and take a look before or after school
  • Winners have blue stickers on them and honorable mentions have red stickers

Bigelow Outreach Club sponsors Paint Bar Event – June 7th

Come and demonstrate your artistic talents at the Paint Bar in West Newton on June 7th, from 6:30 to 9:30 pm

The Bigelow Outreach Club is sponsoring a night of painting and raising money for the SEGA Girls School in Tanzania! Tickets to the event are $50.00 per person – half of the proceeds go directly to the SEGA School. Order forms with more details will be distributed in homebases during the week of May 1st and can be downloaded here.  More information can be found on the Outreach Club’s website.  This event is open to kids (over the age of 8) and adults.

Please reserve your spots as soon as possible, because the Paint Bar will open this event up to the general public in mid-May. Let’s make this an all Bigelow event!

Mahalo! We had a great Big Night

It was a lovely evening where Bigelow parents, guardians, friends, teachers and staff munched on great food, sipped the Hawaiian Sunrise, bid on great items and most importantly, reconnected with old friends and met new ones. Check out some pictures.

The event raised over $15,000, which will go towards curriculum-enriching programs such as the Creative Arts and Sciences, student scholarships, school grounds upkeep, classroom supplies, as well as gym and technology items not covered by the regular school budget.

MANY THANKS to all who attended, who participated in the auction and to the people and businesses who donated goods, services as well as their time and talents to make our Big Night a great night.

Specifically, thank you to:

  • Our wonderful dynamic duo, co-chairs ~ Tammy McKenna and Beth Panella ~ who worked long hours to bring a great concept to fruition.

If you left before the closing of the Big Night Auction, please review the bidding sheets we emailed to you. The items are at the home of one of our volunteers. You can pick them up during one of the following times:

Wednesday, 05/24 – from 9am to 12:30 and 3:30pm to 7pm
Thursday, 05/25 – from 8:30am to 2:30pm
Friday, 05/26 – from 8:30am to 4pm and form 6pm to 8pm

Upcoming Library Programs for Grades 5-7

LEGO WeDo: May 24th, 7:30 pm, second floor Computer Center: Awaken kids’ curiosity and interest in problem solving! Kids build LEGO models and then program them to move and react. Grades 5-7. Space is limited. Pick up a ticket in the Children’s room 15 minutes before the program begins.

Pizza & Speed Book Dating: June 7th, 7:00 pm, second floor Teen Area: Have a book you are dying to talk about? Bring a great book with you and eat pizza, hang out and chat. Grades 5-7. Register online.

Tween Crafternoons,  June 13th, 3:30 pm, second floor Teen Area: Let’s meet on the second Tuesday of every month to make crafts and eat snacks. This month: shrinky dinks! Grades 5-7.

Volunteer to help NCE!

Newton Community Ed is looking for two PTO members to join its Commission. NCE Commission members guide the organization in administration of the program.

Volunteers will be asked to attend four-five meetings over the course of the school year, and to assist with various projects as assigned by the NCE Director.
