A note from Mr. Harrison

This note from Todd Harrison was emailed from the school earlier this week.  Please join us in wishing Todd a continued recovery.  We look forward to having you back at Bigelow!!    And be careful on those ice skates in the future.

“Dear Parents,

As you have heard, I took a bad fall while skating earlier this month and spent two days in the hospital.  I am pleased to let you know that I am mending quickly.  Thank you so much for your many well wishes.  Your emails, your children’s get well cards, and the care package from the PTO have all been heartwarming.  My pains have greatly subsided and my endurance is returning in force, and I am eager to get back to Bigelow.  My doctors, however, have recommended that I stay out of work for another 1 ½ weeks. Then, depending upon my strength, they will hopefully give me a green light to start to return to work in short increments.

Until my full return, a substitute will be filling in for me.  Mr. Joe Barnes, a former principal in the Needham Public Schools with 35 years experience in elementary and middle schools, will help assistant principals Lucas Mogensen and Courtney Rau Rogers run the school.  He was introduced to the students and started work yesterday, January 22.  Please give him a big welcome. 

I miss the daily Bigelow buzz and can’t wait to be back again.  You can reach me by email if you have any questions.

Next PTO Meeting – Jan 29th 8:30am

Please join us for our next PTO meeting on Thursday, Jan 29th from 8:30am to 9:30am in the Bigelow Learning Commons.  Superintendent David Fleishman and members of the Newton School Committee will make their annual visit to the Bigelow PTO.  The meeting will include a brief update on district initiatives (e.g. the new PARCC standardized test and new building plans), followed by an interactive session to answer your questions and listen to feedback.

 Save the date for a fun, free EXPO at Newton North High School Thursday, January 22 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Teens and parents/guardians are invited to the Just Think: Teens Making Smart Choices expo for participative, informative exhibits; live musical performances; free refreshments; and fun. Meet 30+ community exhibitors who help teens navigate high school pressures in order to stay safe and healthy. Get information about everything from driving and pedestrian safety to healthy eating and positive body image to stress reduction and mental health support.

Postural & Growth Screenings week of Jan 12th

Postural screening for 6th, 7th and 8th grades and growth screening, for 7th grade only, will take place during your child’s PE class the week of January 12, 2015.  A letter from Bigelow’s Health Room was emailed out earlier this week with more information regarding these screenings, including information on opting out.   Click here for more information Growth parent notification 2014/15 and Postural screening parent notification 2014/15

NewTV After School Video Program at Bigelow

NewTV, Newton’s Local Public Access Television Station, will be running a free program for Bigelow students at Bigelow on Thursday February 5th, 12th, and 26th from 3 – 4:30pm in Room 208.

Students will learn how to storyboard, write scripts and use video cameras to create music videos and public service announcements, which will then be aired on NewTV’s Education Channel after the class is completed. Enrollment will be capped at 12 students and will be on a first come, first serve basis. To sign up, please contact joeg@newtv.org.

BIG NIGHT Save the Date

Mark your calendars now for Bigelow’s Big Night, our BIG festive evening of food and friends.  This year the Big Night is going to be held the evening of May 9th at the Commander’s Mansion in Watertown.  We hope you will be able to join us.
