“Explore Japan” cultural enrichment summer program

“Explore Japan” is a  two-week day program coming to Milton High School (for girls) and Pierce Middle School in Milton (for boys)  this summer, from July 24th through August 13th.

In Explore Japan, local students join visiting students from Japan and learn about each others respective cultures in a fun environment.  

The program includes arts and crafts projects, sports and martial arts, cuisine, music, pop culture and much more.  Each afternoon, the entire group embarks on field trips to area sights and activities.

For any family who can host one of the visiting Japanese students for this program, their child can attend the full program free of charge.  Hosting is easy, fun, and a great experience for the entire family.

Summer workshop: Practical Math for Programming Video Games

Newton Community Education is offering a one-week summer course, aimed at middle school students, in the programming dialect of Scheme, used for video game programming. No previous programming experience needed.

The workshop will take place 9am-4 pm on August 19 through 23 at Newton North High School, The cost is $275.

Newton Community Farm internship opportunity for high school students

Newton Community Farm (303 Nahanton Street, Newton) is now accepting inquiries for its high school summer intern program.

Summer internships are unpaid opportunities for high school students to learn about organic and community farming in a fun, friendly environment.  No experience is necessary, just a desire to learn and work hard.  Minimum requirement for the internship is 8 am to noon, two days per week for two weeks, but can expand up to five days per week (Tuesday through Saturday) for as many weeks as desired.

Summer Camp Fair, Jan. 27

The City of Newton is sponsoring its yearly summer camp fair on Sunday January 27, at Newton North High School from noon to 4pm.

Camps run by Newton Parks & Recreation and the Newton Public Schools, including Newton Community Education and SPACE camp, will be represented at the fair.

Come early to reserve your child’s spot in the program of his or her choice for Summer 2013 or to learn more about the many varied options offered in our city. More information about Newton’s camps is available on the Parks & Recreation Dept. website.

Suzuki School of Newton Fiddle Camp

The Suzuki School of Newton is hosting a Fiddle Camp for violin, cello, and guitar players ages 9 to adult with a minimum of one year of study in their instrument. The camp features daytime fiddle classes taught by an internationally recognized faculty, student performances, a staff concert, and other summertime activities. Brookline Music School’s summer programs

Brookline Music School’s summer programs (June 25-August 23) offer private instruction and classes for babies to adults. Summer is the perfect time to try out the various programs. Children can sample a variety of musical instruments or take a beginners course. Teenagers can play with other musicians and record a four-song cd or take private lessons. Adults can take as many lessons as they choose or play music with others.

Summer Art Workshops at the Arsenal Center

The Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown has Art Workshops for 5 & 6 year olds; 7 – 10 year olds; 11+ in Painting, Clay, Dolls, Mixed-Media, Printmaking, Drawing, Comics, Jewelry, Puppets and more.  These week-long sessions run from June 18 – August 24 with morning and afternoon sections. EXCITING NEW CLASSES AT NEWTON COMMUNITY FARM THIS SUMMER!

Down Under Yoga of Newtonville join us to offer Family Yoga at the Farm.  Friday July 20th, July 27th, and Friday August 17th, and August 24th, 9:30am – 10:30am
What better way to spend a Friday morning than doing yoga outside on the Farm with your child?  We are very excited to welcome Christyn Schroeder of Down Under Yoga, Newtonville for a summer series designed for children aged 4 – 8 yrs old to enjoy alongside a parent or caregiver.

Farm Sprouts – We are excited to announce that we are now offering our popular pre-school summer program on Thursdays as well as Tuesdays during July and August.  Join us for an hour of fun and exploration at the Farm. Together we will learn about farm life as we read a story and participate in a hands-on activity.

Farmer in Training (Grades 3 -5)  We are now offering this popular summer program for an additional week, Tuesday June 19th – Friday June 22nd.  Spend a week outdoors with your peers and the staff of Newton Community Farm exploring plant and animal life through hands on, interactive learning.

The Art of Musical Comedy

An afternoon program for students ages 7-13 at the Newton Cultural Center, 225 Nevada Street. Mondays – Thursdays, June 25 – July 12, 1:00 – 3:00pm (no class July 4th) $225.  In this exciting, new afternoon program, students learn what it takes to be a master of the art of musical comedy performance. Students will hone their acting skills with improv and theater games, used by such illustrious theater companies as Chicago’s Second City. They will learn to sing and dance their favorite show tunes, from shows ranging from “The Sound of Music” to “Wicked.” This will culminate, at the end of the program, in a Broadway-style cabaret performance of these songs for family and friends. Fessenden Camp Session auction

Are you still trying to figure out what to do with your kids this summer?  The Lincoln-Eliot PTO is auctioning off two (2) -month-long sessions at Fessenden Camp. The value is $1,400-$2,350.
