Register for Newton SouthEast Little League’s Summer Season

Following the tremendous success of the Sandlot program last year, Newton South East Little League is pleased to announce registration for the Summer 2013 Sandlot Program for eligible 9-12 year olds.

Instead of forming teams with set rosters and coaching staffs. NSELL conducts “Sandlot Baseball Nights” on two weeknights per week from the last week of June through the middle of August. The league provides shirts, hats, umpires, coaches and other game-related logistics. The objective is to give everyone a chance to have fun playing competitive baseball in a well organized environment.

The cost is $75 and limited to 75 participants on a first come, first serve basis. Please visit  the NSELL website for more details and to register.

Summer Program at Walnut Hill School for the Arts

Walnut Hill School for the Arts and the New Art Center in Newton—two of the region’s most respected arts institutions—have created a new Summer Visual Art Program for artists in grades 7–12 who are interested in refining their skills in visual art, while exploring new disciplines and techniques.

The three-week program, July 20 – August 16, allows students to experience Ceramics, 2-D Mixed Media or 3-D Mixed Media, Drawing and Painting, Visual Art Career Exploration, and Portfolio Preparation. Each week, students will select one class for the entire morning and two different classes for the afternoon.

The program takes place on Walnut Hill’s scenic 30-acre campus in Natick, utilizing the School’s wide range of visual art studios. Classes are taught by a diverse group of talented faculty from both organizations. Lunch is provided each day, and there will be opportunities for a daily swim in Walnut Hill’s outdoor pool (weather permitting). At the close of the three weeks, students will exhibit their artwork in a formal gallery exhibition and reception for family and friends.

More information, including registration, is on the Walnut Hill website.

Summer theater opportunities with Newton Youth Players

There are still a few spots open for the Newton Youth Players’ summer production of “Oliver!”. Newton Youth Players is a wildly popular theatre program for elementary school children that boasts filled registration one year in advance for its school year programs. The summer play is especially delightful because of the extra time that can be spent on the preparation.

Rehearsals are from 9am – noon, giving ample time to work on choreography, scenery and props production. The first rehearsal will take place on June 27 th at Newton City Hall in the War Memorial Auditorium. Subsequent rehearsals and performance will be at Franklin Elementary School, 125 Derby Street in Newton. The performance is July 17th. Please register at the NYP website.

For those looking for a full day of theatrical experience, Newton Youth Players offers a companion afternoon program, “Choices,” from 1pm – 3pm, June 27th – July 11th. Directed by Marlene Fereshetian and Ruth Housman, it is an original story-building program, using music, humor, magic, dance and art. This program will spend its opening day at Newton City Hall, and then continue to Franklin School. Registration and more information is on the NYP website.
