8th Grade End of Year Activities

Dear 8th grade parents and caregivers,

We are happy to be able to share with you information regarding end of year activities for our 8th graders. After many months of uncertainty regarding what we can do as the PTO, we are now moving forward on our plans to make the graduation celebration as special as possible for the class of 2021.

Please make sure to read this message in its entirety.

Graduation and Field Day:

As Mr. Harrison’s email said, graduation will be held outdoors in Burr Park on the morning of Monday, June 21st, and the field day will start after lunch, with lots of surprises and fun for the kids. Please see Mr. Harrison’s message from May 17 for more official details.

The PTO will be providing specially decorated cupcakes and drinks for our graduates during the field day in the afternoon.

8th grade gift to the school:

As always, the 8th grade class will be giving a gift to the school. This year we are giving 2 ping pong tables, along with balls and paddles, which will be used in the gym. The tables are arriving next week, so our kids will be able to enjoy them for a few weeks!

Boston Harbor Cruise:

We are also very excited about the evening of graduation, when the 8th graders will have the opportunity to cruise Boston Harbor on the Odyssey, from 7-9 pm. Dinner will be served (please contact Gabriela Kroszynski if your child has special dietary needs), and a DJ will provide music. Also, the PTO is hiring an open photo booth on the cruise, and the kids will then be able to download the pictures to their smartphones. Mr. Harrison told us that the cruise held two years ago for the 8th graders was a huge hit, and that he will also attend this year. We think this will be very special for our kids as this will be his last event as Bigelow Principal. Some 8th grade teachers will also go on the cruise as chaperones.

Since we cannot use busses this year for transportation, we suggest that families carpool to and from the event.

Time of arrival: 6PM-6:30PM
Time of cruise: 7PM-9PM
Pickup Time: 9PM (please be punctual)
Address: 60 Rowes Wharf, Boston, MA 02110 – Behind the Boston Harbor Hotel

1. The cost of the cruise is $65 per child (The PTO has made a contribution in order to lower the price). If your child will be going on the cruise, please make sure to:

· Sign this form https://forms.gle/wYPuBtc1VVjixnuS8

· Pay $65 (see payment options below)

· If a student you know needs a scholarship in order to attend, please email the 8th grade guidance counselor Jessica Pierce at piercej@newton.k12.ma.us
All students are encouraged to attend regardless of financial situation.

2. Other Graduation Costs: There are many costs associated with the outdoor graduation, the field day, the class gift and the cruise scholarships. This amounts to approximately $30 per child. As the 8th grade has not been able to fundraise this year, we ask each family to contribute this amount. As always, we are grateful for any additional donations!

The deadline to sign up and pay is Friday, June 4th at noon.

Payment:

When making a payment, please indicate if it is a donation only to cover graduation costs ($30/child or more to help supplement), or a donation and the cruise cost ($65+$30 or more to help supplement).
