Brookline’s First Light Festival, Nov. 29, 5-8pm

The Town of Brookline welcomes the winter season by hosting a town-wide annual celebration on Thursday, November 29 from 5:00 to 8:00pm. The 1st Light Festival is held in Brookline’s commercial districts of Brookline Village, Coolidge Corner, Washington Square, Saint Mary’s and Putterham Circle.

This year, Brookline will feature local music, dance, art and entertainment performances, light installations by Sina Lightworks in several locations, and a Brookline photo contest.

Brookline’s Winter Festival is organized by the Economic Development Division and volunteers to celebrate the upcoming holiday season, to support Brookline’s retailers and to integrate light and color by the local community during the darkest time of the year.

Nursing Notes: November is National Diabetes Awareness month.

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugar to build up in your blood.

Diabetes can cause serious health complications Continue reading

Intramural Basketball Registration at Boys & Girls Club

Registration is now open for the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club’’s many intramural basketball leagues for children ages 6-18. We offer coed leagues for children in grades k-12 which attract players of all levels of ability. Games start in December and run through mid-March.

The Club’s program is skills-based rather than competition-based. Minimum playing rules in all leagues guarantee that participants will play at least half of each game provided they attend their weekly practice (Grades 3-6). Teams are carefully balanced by age, grade, and ability so that natural defensive match ups form allowing all children to develop at their own pace. This allows players to concentrate on self-improvement rather than worry about making mistakes and losing games.

All current Club members are eligible to play. New families may purchase
a Winter Seasonal membership for $100 or a $125 general membership for the remaining year.

For more information email Jennifer McAuliffe, Program Director at the Boys & Girls Club.  Online registration is available here.
