Summer Video Game Programming for Middle Schoolers

Newton Community Education is offering a special summer course for middle school students:

Bootstrap: Practical Math for Programming Video Games

Bootstrap is a computer programming course with a twist—come learn programming basics in the Racket language and use your skills to program your own video game using algebraic and geometric concepts. Put your knowledge into action to create a computer game of your own design.

August 19 – August 23
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Newton North High School
Cost: $275

Once you learn Bootstrap, these skills can be put to use in other programming environments, and even in your math class! No previous programming experience necessary. Grades 6-8.

Students with Disabilities Transitioning from School to Adulthood

The Newton Parent Advisory Council for Special Education presents “What every transitioning student with disabilities needs to know,” a panel of experts in Adult Services for parents of students finishing high school.

Panel members will cover DDS services, residential services for those who are not eligible for state services, SSI/SSDI, and Massachusetts Rehab services for the transitioning student or adult.

Piano concert & celebration, April 6

On Saturday, April 6 at 7:30pm, Suzuki School of Newton (SSN) faculty and advanced students will perform at the Scandinavian Living Center, 206 Waltham Street in Newton.

Distinguished SSN alumna Anna Larsen, age 13, will be one of the performers. The concert, which will showcase a Steinway B concert grand piano, is free and open to the public. The program ranges in styles from Bach and Beethoven to tango and ragtime and is sure to please piano lovers of all ages.

“Explore Japan” cultural enrichment summer program

“Explore Japan” is a two-week day program coming to Milton High School (for girls) and Pierce Middle School in Milton (for boys) this summer, from July 24th through August 13th.

In Explore Japan, local students join visiting students from Japan and learn about each others respective cultures in a fun environment.

The program includes arts and crafts projects, sports and martial arts, cuisine, music, pop culture and much more. Each afternoon, the entire group embarks on field trips to area sights and activities.

For any family who can host one of the visiting Japanese students for this program, their child can attend the full program free of charge. Hosting is easy, fun, and a great experience for the entire family.

Spontaneous Generation: Improv at Newton North, April 3-6

Jazz, Hip Hop & Creative Dance Class for 3-5 year olds

Dancers will learn the basic elements of Jazz Dance and Hip Hop set to today’s popular music. Along with dance technique instruction, they’ll be given the opportunity to creatively express themselves through open-ended movement. The class will include stretching exercises, progressions across the floor and sequences of age-appropriate choreography that will build week to week.

This fun, lively 45-minute class is offered to students who danced with us last season as well as new students.

Frozen Cookie Dough Order Pick-Up this Wednesday, March 27, 2013 – mark your calendar!!!!

First a big thank you to all the students and parents who sent in their orders for cookie dough. We sold over $5,000 worth of Cookie Dough raising just over $2,000 for the Cyndi Daily-Smith and Howard B. Smith Scholarship Fund!

All orders for the frozen cookie dough must be picked up in the school cafeteria this Wednesday, March 27, 2013, between 2:45 and 4:30 pm. Small orders can be taken home by the students, larger ones need to be picked up by an adult. Please make arrangements accordingly!

Any orders which do not get picked up will remain at the school until the next day. After that, they will be donated (the school will be closed on Friday). Please make sure that your orders get picked up on Wednesday. Thank you!

Public safety meeting in Chestnut Hill, April 4

The CHESTNUT HILL ASSOCIATION invites the public, those who live in Chestnut Hill and those who don’t, to attend a presentation and discussion on public safety on Thursday, April 4 at 7:00 P.M. in the Parish Hall, behind the Church of the Redeemer, 379 Hammond Street, Chestnut Hill (Doors open at 6:30).

A presentation will be made by a representative of the Newton Police Department, who will be ready to answer our questions and advise us on ways to be safer at home and away from home.

Please park behind the Church (off Suffolk Road) or on Suffolk Road, Kingsbury Road, or Reservoir Avenue, all of which are off Hammond Street.

The presentation will end about 8:00 p.m. Please feel free to invite your neighbors and friends who are interested. No charge for admission.
