Boston Symphony Orchestra’s Days in the Arts Summer 2012

The BSO’s popular overnight summer camp is now open for pre-application. For more than four decades, the BSO has provided thousands of children throughout Massachusetts with an opportunity to participate in this multi-arts/creative writing overnight camp in the beautiful Berkshires. In the summer of 2012, Newton students in grades 5, 6, & 7 are eligible to participate in Week 6, JUL 30 – AUG 3. Only 15 students from Newton will be selected by lottery to participate. Pre-applications with details about the program are available from the music teacher in your school. Pre-applications must be returned no later than 4:00PM on Thursday, March 1 to the Fine Arts Department, Newton Public Schools, 100 Walnut Street, Newton, MA 02460.

A-Cappalooza — benefit concert, March 3, 7:30pm

A-Cappalooza is a fabulous a cappella concert held at Newton South auditorium on March 3 at 7:30pm, featuring Newton South’s “Newtones,” Newton North’s “Forte,” and two professional groups: Berklee College of Music’s “Pitch Slapped” and “Redline,” a Boston-based all-male group. REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR MOST LEAGUES ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 31!

On-line registration for the 2012 Spring baseball season is open for boys and girls ages 4 to 12. These programs run from April through the middle of June:

  • T-BALL – kindergarten or entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2012;
  • Farm Division – 1st and 2nd grade;
  • College Division – 3rd-6th grade: This division is a developmental league;
  •  Cooperstown Division – 3th through 6th grade: This division is a more advanced league. Players who wish to play in the Cooperstown Division must attend the tryout. Little League age 12 players may play in this division by waiver only;
  •  Major League Division – 4th through 7th grade: Open to players who are aged 10 to 12. To be placed on a Major League team you must try out.

LatinSummer Boston summer program, July 23-Aug. 3

Introducing “LatinSummer Boston,” a two-week summer enrichment program that provides students in grades 1-7 a chance to learn about Latin and the classical world. This summer, let’s carpe diem and do as the Romans did!

Creative and enthusiastic instructors provide an array of exciting and hands-on activities that introduce students to many varied aspects of classical and conversational Latin, Greco-Roman mythology, and Roman culture and daily life. No prior knowledge of Latin or Classics is required.  

LatinSummer Boston will run from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm on weekdays from July 23 – August 3 at The Roxbury Latin School. LatinSummer is sponsored by the nonprofit Ascanius: The Classics Youth Institute and The Roxbury Latin School. Registration fees range from $65-$250 per student depending on financial need. Newton South Little League: Registration end Sunday, Feb. 12

Middle school students living in the Angier, Countryside, and Zervas school districts who will be 12 years or younger on April 30, 2012, are invited to play in Newton South Little League!

Sewing Classes in West Newton

“Get Healthy & Like It!” panel discussion, Feb. 2

The Waban Library Center presents “Get Healthy and Like it! “, a panel discussion on
Thursday, February 2, 7:30-9pm, at the Waban Library Center 1608 Beacon Street.  The panel includes:

  • Dave Becker – chef and owner of the Needham restaurant, Sweet Basil, where he serves healthy, delicious, local food.
  • Linda Crowe –  WLC volunteer and notable vegetarian, will share how she crafted a diet that helped her lower her cholesterol 40 points without drugs.
  • Ellen Cohen-Kaplan – occupational therapist and fitness expert, will share some fitness and nutrition tips to keep you on track through the winter months and beyond.  She’ll also discuss the latest fitness guidlelines and show you how to set up a home gym for under $50.
