Open Houses for Highlands After School Program

The Newton Highlands After-School Program, just for middle school children is hosting an Open House for interested families on Tuesday, March 27 from 5:30-6:30 PM at Brigham House, 20 Hartford Street, Newton Highlands. This is a terrific opportunity for parents of Brown and Oak Hill students to learn more about the program as they plan for the next school year. Bridging the Generations: An Intergenerational Music Class

Join us for a special kind of music-making! This class combines all the elements of a regular music class, but it is set in a senior living facility, where the residents participate with us by singing, playing instruments, or simply watching. The class allows for and encourages interaction between the children and the seniors. With rhythm instruments, songs, play materials and movement, we create a rich musical experience for everyone.

Donate Used Bicycles

Do you have an unused bike in your garage? Turn it into a tax deduction while also supporting Bikes Not Bombs. Bring your bikes to the First Unitarian Church in West Newton, 1326 Washington St., on April 15th between 10am and 2pm along with a $10 donation per bike. Bikes of all styles and sizes are accepted…even old bike parts! Bikes are sent to developing countries and are used here in New England to teach mechanical skills to worthy kids who get to keep the fruits of their labors. Brundibar

Longy is partnering with the Underground Railway Theater to present a staged reading of Brundibar, a children’s opera by Hans Krasa with a new libretto by acclaimed playwright, Tony Kushner.   The opera will feature singers from Longy’s Preparatory Studies voice and choral departments. Actors from the Underground Railway Theatre will present a staged reading of excerpts from Kusner’s one act play But the Giraffe as a prelude to the opera.

Impact of concussions

Are you a parent, or coach and want to understand the impact of concussions
on young student athletes?

Join Lauren Smith, MD, MPH, medical director for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, for Concussions Facts and Myths – What Parents Need to Know on Thursday, March 22nd from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Williams Elementary School, 141 Grove St. 02466. Dr. Smith will present up to date information about concussions among young athletes and discuss what parents and athletes can do to improve recovery and reduce the likelihood of long term problems. She will also review the rules on sports-related head injuries in public schools in Massachusetts. Targeted for all parents and coaches. No registration required. Co-sponsored by the Newton PTO Council, Williams PTO and The Newton Partnership. Warning: Do not park in the Lasell College parking lot. They ticket and tow.
