Urban Improv to visit Bigelow 7th Graders this week

On Tuesday, March 27th, Urban Improv will perform 3 skits for our 7th graders that will focus on microaggessions to be followed by discussions with the students. Urban Improv is an organization whose mission is to strengthen young people’s social and emotional skills for every stage in life through dialogue, creativity and performance.

This program is funded by the PTO, thanks to the support and donations of our amazing community who believes in the purpose of our organization.

 

Tuesday: “Navigating the Cyber World”

This informative Parent Workshop is sponsored by Brown Middle School and the Middlesex Partnerships for Youth, Inc. – the outreach division of the Middlesex DA’s Office. It will take place on Tuesday, March 27 from 6:45-8:00pm in the Brown Auditorium.

Geared for parents, this workshop reviews the challenges that may arise through use of the Internet, social media and smart phones. It is important for parents to be aware of the popular apps, social media sites and programs used by youth online. This workshop explains the issues and possible consequences from cyber bullying, sexting and revealing identifying information to strangers. This event is offered to all Newton middle school parents.

PTO Meeting: “Social and emotional health in Middle School”

Social and emotional health and well-being are essential to a successful middle school experience. But what should parents do when things aren’t going well? Dr. Jordanna L’Esperance, clinical and school psychologist at Bigelow Middle School, and Bigelow’s Counselors will discuss the resources available for students at Bigelow and within the Newton Community at the next PTO meeting on Wednesday, April 4, 7pm, at the Bigelow Library. Parents are encouraged to send questions prior to the evening to Dr. L’Esperance, or ask them during the meeting. Say you are with Bigelow Middle School and the school will get $5 back. Free validated garage parking. Helmets are suggested, bring your own, a limited number will be avail-\able to borrow. This event is open to the general public. Bigelow volunteers will be there. You are responsible for your child’s admission and transport. Families are welcome to come join the fun. There is a galley area for parents to gather and watch if they do not want to skate. Please share and invite this message with friends and families.

The Centre Street Food Pantry is happy to take your unopened food that has not expired.  They’re located at 11 Homer Street (entrance is on Furber Lane). Newton Community Farm Hiring Executive Director

Do you have a passion for engaging children and adults in the joys of community farming and outdoor education? Do you love to buy and eat local produce? Are you a gifted communicator, manager, and leader? Then you might be the new Executive Director of the Newton Community Farm!

In this newly-created position, the Executive Director will drive the mission and provide oversight and implementation of the programs of the Farm. NCF provides locally grown produce through a variety of distribution channels, educates the public about the sustainable use of land and other natural resources, offers community events throughout the year, and has volunteer opportunities for children and adults. The new leader will manage a dedicated staff, drive fundraising and represent the organization to the community at large. The ideal candidate is an accomplished manager with a passion and skill-set for community outreach.

Key duties include administration and operations, strategic planning, fundraising, marketing, community outreach and events. The position reports directly to the President of the Board of Directors.

April School Vacation Programs

Burr Park Vacation Camp for grades K – 3. Enjoy a fun field trip each day including Dave and Busters, Wooden Toys and Crafts, One Stop Fun and Launch. Standard day from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm or extended day from 8:15 am – 5:30 pm are available. Register by day or for all 4 days.

Lower Falls Community Center special event camp for grades K – 6 and field trip camp for grades 3 – 6. Special event camp features activity choices during the day and a fun special event each day. Events include a Game Show Day, Lego Party, New England Aquarium Touch Tank, and Freestyle Frisbee Show. Field trip camp features a field trip each day including Fun World, Lil Folk Farm, Mystic Aquarium and Launch. Standard day from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm or extended day from 8:15 am – 5:30 pm are available. Register by day or for all 4 days.

Thundercat Sports at Pellegrini Park for ages 6 – 12. Play a variety of sports throughout the day. Camp runs 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Register by day or for all 4 days.
