Summer Reading
Bigelow Reads Together! The One School, One Book Program – supported by the Bigelow PTO – was created to foster a more inclusive community through participation in a common reading experience as a whole school. Through discussion and advisory activities, staff and students will share a common experience of reading and learning together. This summer students and staff will read Full Cicada Moon by Marilyn Hilton. In the fall students will participate in advisory discussion and activities related to the book. More information in the Library website.
Ms. Summa, Bigelow Librarian, also encourages reading whatever kids want. “Grab your beach blanket and snuggle down with a good book, magazine, or audiobook. Anything you read or listen to during the summer keeps your brain in shape for the season.” Here are some suggested titles.

3 More Chaperones Needed for the 8th Grade Dance
Calling all 7th and 6th grade parents and friends! We still need 3 chaperones for the 8th Grade Dance, on June 21st. It is a tradition at Bigelow for 7th grade parents and guardians (6th grade parents are welcome as well) to chaperone the 8th grade year-end dance. This year the dance will be on Thursday, June 21st, from 7-10 in the Bigelow Cafeteria. We have two shifts available (7-8:30 pm and 8:30-10 pm) and need four people per shift. If you are interested in volunteering please email the PTO at bigelowbulldog@gmail.com. Thank you!

Medication Pick-up and other Reminders from the School Nurse
Parents of students who have medication stored in the health room should pick it up by the last day of school, June 22. All medication (pills, epi-pens, inhalers, etc.) not picked up will be discarded. Please plan ahead to pick medication up so it is not wasted! Medication may not be carried home by the student — it must be picked up by an adult. School nurses will not be available after June 22 to return medication to families.
Please click here for details on the following reminders:
- Medication Order: All medication orders expire at the end of the school year.
- West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease Prevention: Take steps to avoid getting sick!
- Shoo the flu! Seasonal influenza vaccine will be offered this fall during the school day to students and employees.
Have a happy and healthy summer! Sue Schy, Bigelow Nurse
Access to Bigelow directory ends June 29, 2018
For housekeeping purposes, access to this year’s electronic Bigelow Family Directory and app will end temporarily on June 29, 2018. Current families will have the opportunity to access the directory mid July. Incoming families will have access to it in September.
8th Grade Families, please take the opportunity to update your information on the Bigelow Directory today, so it is transferred correctly to the Newton North PTSO directory. This way you will not miss any important information from the Newton North PTSO. Just login to: https://www.myschoolanywhere.com/login.a5w. Please, do NOT change your children’s grade yet; it will be done automatically.
Hosting a SEGA School Student
Bigelow’s sister school, the SEGA School for Girls, is looking for a family to host one of their students who will be visiting Newton. This is a unique cultural opportunity for a Bigelow family to provide a place to stay for one of the Tanzanian girls as they visit the US for a four to five week period in November. If you are interested in more details, please contact John King (Bigelow teacher) at kingjo@newton.k12.ma.us. Thank you!
