REMINDER – Thursday, March 9, is an early release day

A reminder from the principal:

Dear Parents,

Just a quick reminder that this Thursday, March 9, is an early release day. All students will be dismissed at 11:30am. There are no late buses, and students should leave the building promptly at 11:30am. This is the last early release day of the year for the whole school. (Sixth graders only have an early release day on Step-up Day, June 9.)

Think spring!

From the Underwood PTO:

This is the second year the Underwood PTO is organizing a FREE public camp fair, which raises over $7000 through fees paid by participating camps.  If at all possible, we are asking families to try to stop by for any portion of the fair and perhaps check out a few tables (if of interest, of course!).  Remember: Without the support of the community, the PTO will not be able to continue organizing this fair, which raises over $7,000 for our children!
Thank you!! Hope to see you there!

Big Night – We NEED VOLUNTEERS!

Please consider joining the planning committee. You can make this as large or small a time commitment as you would like. There are many tasks – ranging from sending a few emails to setting up an entire auction online and decorating the venue on the day of the event. All help is vital and greatly appreciated!

Planning committee meeting:
Wednesday, February 15th
7 pm
at Beth Panella’s Home
5 Channing Road (not Street) in Newton Center

Please email Beth if you can attend the meeting and/or are interested in volunteering for the Big Night.

See some of the pictures from last year’s Big Night below – the theme was “Bigelow Speakeasy” and everyone had a fantastic time while raising more than $15,000 for the school!

The current PTO members who have been most active in planning and organizing the Big Night will be leaving Bigelow this year, so we need new 6th and 7th grade parents to join the planning committee and become familiar with how the event is run so that it can continue to be a success in the coming years.

New England Camp Fair rescheduled due to snow storm

The Underwood PTO’s NEW ENGLAND CAMP FAIR is canceled due to the Nor’easter closing in on the Boston Metro area on Thursday. We expect 7-10+ inches falling heavily from 7am-7pm, which means Newton schools will almost surely be closed (and therefore, Bigelow Middle School would be closed). Moreover, we feel it would be unsafe to encourage families to venture out.

Please note our NEW DATE & TIME:

Sunday, March 5th, 2017 from  11-2pm
in the Bigelow Middle School gymnasium

We hope you will try to attend with your children and support our school. As you  know, the Camp Fair is free and open to all.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

7th Grade Winter Wonderland

This first-ever after school ice cream social event for 7th graders will take place in the gym and cafeteria on Wednesday, February 15, 3-5pm.

In addition to ice cream sundaes, there will be ping pong, board games, their favorite playlist of music, basketball in the gym, and pizza and cotton candy for sale in the cafeteria.  Admission is $5 (sundaes included!), and tickets are on sale during all lunch periods.

It has been initiated by a group of seventh graders, just for Bigelow’s seventh grade, as an alternative to evening dances, which have attracted less interest in the past year.

It will be a fun afternoon and will build community spirit.  Most importantly, we want the students to have a successful experience in organizing their own event.

Please encourage your seventh grade child to attend.

Teacher Appreciation Luncheon – TOMORROW, Feb. 1

Please remember to drop off all items either at Stacy Schwartz’s home, 15 Park Ave. Newton, until 10 PM this evening or at the teacher’s lunchroom at Bigelow no later than 10:30 AM tomorrow (perishables can be placed in the refrigerator there).

YOU CAN STILL SIGN UP to donate or volunteer by clicking HERE.

  • It is most helpful if items are brought in recyclable containers. Please send in your favorite lunch food!
  • Salads, sandwiches, entrees – whatever you think our wonderful teachers and staff will enjoy.

Thank you again for helping us show our appreciation for our teachers and staff.
