Summer ideas for Middle and High Schoolers

Newton South High School will host the 12th Annual Teen Summer Program Expo. The event is FREE, open to the public and will be held in the cafeteria. Find the perfect summer experience for middle and high school students. Meet directors of enriching summer programs in the U.S. & abroad. Programs for every budget and include academic, adventure, travel, community service, internships, sport instruction, language immersion, arts/theatre/music, college prep and gap year programs. Free Camp Fair

Don’t miss this free event if you have a child attending camp this summer! For the first time ever, the Underwood PTO has organized a FREE public event: the New England Camp Fair.

The Camp Fair is open to ALL local families.  Over 30 camps from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine and Connecticut will be participating. Attending camps serve kids ages 6-14 and represent a mix of day and overnight camps. Participating camps run the gamut from traditional style camps to sports, computer, arts and other specialty themed camps. Come to the fair with your prospective camper and meet in person with Camp Directors and staff from the premier camps in New England. www.newenglandcampfair.org

Discover What Makes a Great Camp Experience

It’s not too early to start thinking about camps! Registration will be here before you know it so why not get a head start? Join Campseekers on November 3rd at the Wellesley College Club to hear from a panel of camp directors and parents on what makes a great camp experience.

You’ll explore topics like:

  • The best age to start camp (both day and overnight)
  • The leading indicators for finding a quality camp
  • General camps vs specialty camps
  • Secrets to a successful summer

Directors from local camps including Linx and Explo will be a part of this discussion.
This program is free and open to the public but seating is limited and you must be registered to attend. (There will be some great camp giveaways for those who attend.)

Basketball Camp run by former Bigelow Student

Anyone interested in polishing up their basketball skills over the summer?  Lex Mongo, former Bigelow student and Newton North grad, has some upcoming clinics and camps.  Lex was member of Newton North’s 2 time state basketball team in 2005 and 2006.  He then played at the Division 1 level at UMass Amherst.  Lex is the proud owner of IHoop Academy.

Lex is running a 2 day clinic at UMass Boston in July.  The dates are July 18th and 19th.  NBA player Rudy Gay will be there.  You can register at www.theihoopacademy.com .

Also Lex is running 2 weeks of basketball camp at Bigelow this summer.  August 3-7 is for middle school students.  August 10-14 is for high school students.

Space & Financial Aid available at Boys & Girls Club Camps

The Boys & Girls Club of Newton still has space available in all summer camp sessions and financial aid is available for those who qualify.

Visit the Club (675 Watertown St.) or register on the Club’s website.

You can also fill out an online financial aid application and a member of the Club’s staff will contact you for a confidential conversation.

There will be an Introductory Parent’s Meeting on Tuesday, June 23, at 6:00 PM in the Learning Center. There are many new things happening this year such as STEM activities twice a week, new field trips and new exciting activities. Join us next week to find out more details like our new themes and to meet this years camp staff.

Teens: Learn Storytelling at the Library

Teens can explore cross-cultural communication, digital and oral storytelling, and recording equipment at the Newton Free Library this summer.

Storytelling Workshops, Tuesdays (7/28, 8/4, 8/11), 7:00pm
Learn about the art of storytelling! Learn how to use recording equipment. Develop and practice your story in preparation for Story Slam on August 25.

Story Slam! August 25, 7:00pm
Teens present their stories before a live, friendly audience. Refreshments provided.
