Centre Street Food Pantry Seeks Marketing & Communications Board Member

Centre Street’s recent operational growth has outpaced many of our supporting capabilities, including marketing and communications. We seek a Board Member who is experienced with the purpose and power of branded communications to help us increase our donor, volunteer, community and client engagement and distinguish ourselves in a crowded non-profit environment. Our focus areas include a mix of strategic and tactical aspects: CSFP brand (look, feel, voice), website, monthly newsletter, as well as email, print and social media campaigns. New Art Shop Brings Unique Handmade Good for the Holiday Season

The New Art Shop hosted by the New Art Center, will open on Friday, November 18 at the New Art Center’s space at the Trio, 245 Walnut Street, 2nd Floor. The shop will be open for run for six weeks (Wednesday through Sunday) until December 23, 2022.    Building upon the New Art Center’s mission and vision by creating an accessible platform for artists to share and sell their work, this cooperative style store is run by the artists whose work is available. Work featured in the New Art Shop ranges from handmade jewelry to paintings and wearable textiles to sculptures. More than fifty artists, craftspeople, and makers are participating this year. 

New Art Center’s Executive Director Emily O’Neil said, “The New Art Center is excited to re-open The New Art Shop for an extended season this year. The New Art Shop will have a variety of unique handmade gifts from local artists, including paintings, prints, wood work, ceramics, jewelry, hand-knit goods, and more. We encourage the surrounding community to check out the shop and support local artists by purchasing gifts for your loved ones.”

The New Art Shop will be open Wednesday-Sunday after the opening weekend.
Days: November 18-20, 25-27, 30, December 1-4,  7-11, 14-18, 21-23.
Hours: Wednesday through Sunday, 12-6 on all days (Fridays hours will be 12-7)

Sign up for Superintendent Search Focus Groups

The Newton Public Schools Superintendent Search Committee is conducting a series of in-person and virtual focus groups designed to solicit perceptions of the district and its services to students, staff, and families. Participants will also be asked for input on what they consider to be the most effective characteristics for the district’s next superintendent. There are several dates and times available from November 17th – 20th. If it is a virtual group, you will receive a link via email prior to the focus group. Help Neighbors Struggling with Food Insecurity

It’s the last week for the Newton Neighbors Thanksgiving Gift Card Drive! We are distributing supermarket gift cards to neighbors experiencing food insecurity, in hopes that they can celebrate the bounty of the holidays! We are more than halfway there! Food prices are so high, please help us cross the line and donate whatever you can for these families.

Newton Neighbors will purchase and distribute gift cards through partner agencies for up to 150 families in Newton, Waltham and Brockton. If you are able to make any size donation to help us reach our goal, we know these families will be so grateful.

Robotics Tournament and STEAM Expo

The LigerBots, Newton’s award-winning high school robotics team, will be hosting a FLL Robotics tournament and a STEAM Expo on Saturday, November 19th, from 12-5pm at Newton North High School. Watch middle school teams who built and programmed robots out of Legos to compete in the FIRST Lego League Competition (FLL) go head to head at the tournament. Also come to the free STEAM Expo event open to the public, to support North and South Clubs who have come to help LigerBots spread STEAM, do a variety of super cool STEAM activities and demonstrations, interact with other High School Robotics teams from across the state, and visit local companies/organizations like the Massachusetts National Guard.

Masks are required except for designated eating locations and admission is free! We hope you can stop by!

Teen Stress Survival Guide Workshop

Druker Auditorium, Newton Free Library
December 14th 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

This workshop led by Families for Depression Awareness staff and a Licensed Mental Health Professional, will teach teens how to identify symptoms of stress and, identify strategies to manage it, as well as how to find help if things start to feel like “more than just stress”.

Claim the expanded Child Tax Credit and other credits by Nov 15

There are just 2 days left for families to claim the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC), Earned Income Tax Credit, and stimulus payment at GetCTC.org! Simplified filing through GetCTC.org is open through November 15th. The website allows families to quickly and easily claim the federal money to which they are entitled. It is mobile-friendly and available in English and Spanish. After the site closes, families still have until April 2025 to claim the 2021 expanded CTC, but must file full tax returns to do so. Donate cooked food for homeless community on Thanksgiving

Are you looking for a way to share some of your delicious Thanksgiving dishes? Make some extra food this year and drop it off at the Newton Police Department at 1321 Washington Street, West Newton, and volunteers will use your food donations to prepare big plates of Thanksgiving dinner for our local (mostly Boston) homeless community. Tickets on sale for “The Visit” at Newton South

Tickets for South Stage Fall Show The Visit are on sale now.  Please go to our website southstage.org  to buy your tickets and tell all your friends to join you. We will be selling concessions for you to enjoy at the show and also flowers to give to actors and stage crew!  We hope to see you there next week Thursday 11/17, Friday 11/18 and Sat 11/19.
