School Committee & Board of Aldermen Candidate Forums, Oct. 23

The League of Women Voters of Newton and NewTV are co-sponsoring candidate forums for all contested municipal races on Sunday, October 23, at NewTV Studios, 23 Easy Street, Newton Highlands. The public is welcome to attend but there is limited seating for a studio audience. If you wish to ask the candidates questions, please arrive 15 minutes before the forum to submit your question in writing. Green Solutions Expo at Newton’s Harvest Fair

Get tips on how to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, reduce your carbon footprint, and see exhibitors with green services, products, and ideas. Passing through a mysterious tollbooth, Milo embarks on a quest to restore the Princesses of Rhyme and Reason to the Kingdom of Wisdom. The musical adaptation of Norton Juster’s award-winning book is onstage just in time to celebrate its 50th Anniversary.

Local Circus is Coming to Newton!

Moody Street Circus is pitching its little top tent at the Nonantum Post 440 on California Street for world-class shows in October.  Community-conscious local circus with stellar 7th and 8th generation circus artists to perform 10 fun-for-all, family-friendly shows weekends from October 15 – Halloween.  Acts include The Bertini Unicycle Troupe & Trampoline Comedy (as seen at Storyland) and Sacha & Melinda Pavlata of the Big Apple Circus, Circus Flora, Cirque Passion (and they are former Mason-Rice parents!). Newton Inspires: An Evening of Ideas and Community

An Olympic medalist and a Peabody Award-winning journalist are among the speakers at “Newton Inspires: An Evening of Ideas and Community,” hosted by the Newton Schools Foundation. Join prominent Newtonians in small group sessions as they discuss their passions, share their insights, and inspire participants with their stories. This FREE event will take place Thursday October 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Newton North High School.

More than two dozen speakers representing an array of fields and interest areas will address topics ranging from education, business, government and economics to sports, arts, entertainment and life. Participants choose three 20-minute sessions to attend. At the end of the evening, participants and speakers will gather together to reconnect over coffee and dessert.

Watertown Children’s Theatre presents “Poe! Poe! Poe!”

Edgar Allen Poe wrote stories and poems that have entertained readers for over 100 years, with twists and turns in them that continue to mystify and delight.

WCT’s Play Factory brings the life and works of Poe together in Poe! Poe! Poe!, performed by an ensemble cast of 6th-9th graders including Newton’s own Zoe Warre.  Performances are October 28-30 in the Black Box Theater at the Arsenal Center for the Arts.  Seating is limited.  Tickets will be available beginning October 14th at www.watertownchildrenstheatre.org or 1.800.838.3006.

Space Night for Girls!, Thurs., Oct. 27 at MIT Lincoln Laboratory

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Boston section is partnering with the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston (ATMOB) and MIT Lincoln Laboratory for a Space Night! Girls in Grades 2 – 8 will be exposed to various hands-on workshops bringing out the excitement of space exploration, and the AMTOB will set up their telescopes for observation of the dynamic night sky! $5 registration fee includes snack and workshop supplies.
