Summer workshop: Practical Math for Programming Video Games

Newton Community Education is offering a one-week summer course, aimed at middle school students, in the programming dialect of Scheme, used for video game programming. No previous programming experience needed.

The workshop will take place 9am-4 pm on August 19 through 23 at Newton North High School, The cost is $275.

Etiquette Academy offers classes for kids

The Etiquette Academy of New England is currently enrolling students who are seeking to perfect their etiquette skills.

  • Etiquette for Young Adults: (High Schoolers)

Tickets available for “The Pajama Game” at Watertown Children’s Theatre

Tickets are now on sale for the Watertown Children’s Theatre presentation of “The Pajama Game” in mid-March.  Tickets are $12 and are available through the WCT website or by calling 1-800-838-3006.

A Broadway musical-comedy classic, featuring the hit musical numbers Steam Heat and Hernando’s Hideaway! Relations at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory are anything but peaceful, between bosses and workers. Everything comes to a head when the employees strike for a 7 1/2 cent pay increase, making sparks fly in the factory! A cast of 4th-9th graders including many from Newton, bring this musical comedy smash to life.

 

Suzuki Prep offers Free Trial Class, Feb. 16

The Suzuki School of Newton offers free trial classes for its Suzuki Prep program for children ages 2-4 and an adult caregiver. This is a fun way to share time with your child: sing, move to music, do pre-instrumental Suzuki activities, and hear live instrument demonstrations from the SSN faculty.

Northeaster Univ. Soccer Clinics, Camps

The Northeastern University soccer program offers a dynamic program of clinics and camps, which focuses on learning through fun games and small-sided play. Co-ed groups will experience our Future Huskies philosophy of promoting fundamental skills and sportsmanship. Upcoming programs include:

  • Elite Winter Prospect Clinic, Feb. 23-24
  • Spring Vacation Camp, April 15-18
  • Summer Youth Camps, June 17-21 and 24-28

Players are grouped both by age and by skill level so that each child is challenged, but not overwhelmed. Our goal is to provide a positive learning environment for all participants, from beginners to the advanced.

Yoga classes for teens and pre-teens

Pre-teen/Teen Yoga

Yoga is a great tool to help pre-teens and teenagers develop healthy relationships with their bodies, as well as to help them feel empowered to make good decisions and manage the stress in their busy lives.  Yoga buillds strength, flexibility, and focus in the mind as well as the body.  

Down Under Yoga’s Christyn Schroeder is teaching a yoga class for kids ages 10-16 in Waban Thursdays from 7:00-8:00 pm starting January 31.  May start anytime, pro-rated for number of classes taken.
