April Vacation Sewing Camp

Come to Newton Sewing Studio during April vacation and learn to sew while having fun!

April 13 – 21
Sessions: 2 hours, 4 hours (morning or afternoon) or full day
Ages: 5+
No experience needed

Beginners will learn how to use a sewing machine by sewing projects that include straight lines and curves, zippers and ruffles, buttons and buttonholes, drawstrings and handles, linings and facings, seam allowances and cutting.  Understand differences in fabrics and why we use them when we do.

If you already know how to sew, try out a new projects designed to suit any level and taste. Try computerized pattern drafting, machine embroidery, or maybe machine felting.

Camp Quinebarge overnight camp in New Hampshire

Camp Quinebarge is a traditional boys and girls (ages 7-15) overnight summer camp in New Hampshire. Since 1936, Quinebarge has provided a safe, fun and nurturing environment for children to learn new skills, try new activities and make friends and memories that will last a lifetime.

Quinebarge is offering a limited special for up to two first-time campers from each school in Massachusetts to attend Quinebarge for a discounted rate for the two-week session. This special offer is limited to the first 50 campers to sign-up. Contact Suzie Kaufman by email to see if discounts are available.

Bold & Beautiful Fashion Show to support Boys & Girls Club, May 22

The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club of Newton’s 16th Annual Fashion Show, BOLD and Beautiful, will be on Wednesday, May 22, at Karoun Restaurant in Newton.

Featuring fashions and accessories from some of Newton’s most original shops including: Brussels Sprouts, Folklorica, Stash and CERI|COMO, this stylish affair will focus on individual style, with a particular eye toward wear-ability for women of many different shapes, sizes, ages and tastes. This year, we are asking guests to, “Find yourself on the runway,” – whether by seeing a new look or possibly modeling one! Guests will also enjoy the colorful décor and sizzling Middle Eastern cuisine at Karoun. Once again, there will be an array of must-have baskets for raffle, an exciting BLING prize, and all that swag!

Tickets are $75 each and include dinner and table seating. Table sizes will vary, and can be reserved by contacting the Boys & Girls Club events coordinator at: (617) 630-2066 or by email. 

Save the Date: NCF Seedling Sale: May 11-12

The Newton Community Farm  (303 Nahanton Street) will hold its annual seedling sale on Saturday May 11 & Sunday May 12 from 12 – 3 pm, rain or shine! There will be 20,000 plants for sale.

Start your garden with hearty seedlings from Newton Community Farm! Choose from a wide array of vegetable and herb varieties, the same ones the Newton Community Farm has used and tested in its fields. NCF starts with the best seeds and plants them in an organically-certified, compost-based potting soil from Vermont Compost Company. All seedlings are hardened off and most are ready for planting upon pick-up. Talk to expert gardeners who will answer your questions.

Cost: $5 for four or six pack of plants. Cash or checks only. Bring a box or bag to carry your plants.
Friend of Farm Pre-Order: Friends of the Farm (by April 27) can pre-order plants using the NCF Seedling Sale Order Form 2013. Orders and payment must be postmarked by April 27th and will be filled in the order received. Pick-up your order on May 9 from 10 am to 7 pm. The minimum order is $20.

“Explore Japan” cultural enrichment summer program

“Explore Japan” is a  two-week day program coming to Milton High School (for girls) and Pierce Middle School in Milton (for boys)  this summer, from July 24th through August 13th.

In Explore Japan, local students join visiting students from Japan and learn about each others respective cultures in a fun environment.  

The program includes arts and crafts projects, sports and martial arts, cuisine, music, pop culture and much more.  Each afternoon, the entire group embarks on field trips to area sights and activities.

For any family who can host one of the visiting Japanese students for this program, their child can attend the full program free of charge.  Hosting is easy, fun, and a great experience for the entire family.
