HISTORIC NEWTON CALENDAR

ANNUAL HOUSE TOUR TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE!
Our 30th Annual House Tour takes place on Sunday, June 3rd. Tickets purchased in advance (before 5 PM on Friday, June 1), are available at a discount; you may buy your tickets online or by calling 617-796-1450. Tickets are $20 for Historic Newton members, $30 for non-members. Tickets may be purchased on the day of the tour at the Jackson Homestead. Tickets purchased on June 3 will cost $25 for Historic Newton members and $35 for non-members. To volunteer to help with the tour, please e-mail us at newtonhousetour@gmail.com. As a volunteer, you will receive a complimentary ticket (a $30 value). We ask you to work only 2.5 hours during the tour, assuring that you have time to use your ticket. GARDENING 101: HOW TO BUILD A RAISED BED
A Vacation Week Family Program
Thinking about starting a garden this spring in your yard? Come learn the basics about how to start a raised bed garden, including: factors to be considered when choosing the location of your raised bed, how to prepare the soil, what plants to select, and some general tips on how to maximize productivity. A class for the whole family! Cost: $45 per family (4 people max, 1 adult required), $40 for members. Includes museum admission and snack. Have you ever wondered how people made cloth at home when store-bought cloth wasn’t available? Want to try weaving your own cloth? Join Beth Guertin, a weaver and teacher of weaving for over twenty-five years, in this hands-on workshop. Watch a demonstration of loom-weaving techniques, and then give it a try yourself! Learn about how the “three sisters” were planted together, try a traditional Native snack still eaten today, and take home seedlings to plant your own “three sisters” at home. E. Benjamin Skinner: Slavery in America Today
E. Benjamin Skinner is an award-wining author and journalist studying the U.S. and global political economies, specializing in modern-day slavery. He has observed negotiations for the sale of human beings on four continents, and will speak about the scope and impact of slavery in America today. At the Newton Cultural Center, 225 Nevada Street, Newton.

Gloria White Hammond: Enslaved Women of Sudan
Sudanese slaves are mostly women and children who have been abducted violently from their homes by slave-traders. Since 2001, while working as a pediatrician and minister, Gloria White Hammond has traveled to Sudan to help liberate enslaved women and offer paths for them to resume normal lives. At the Newton Cultural Center, 225 Nevada Street, Newton.

Jazz, Hip Hop and Creative Dance, $72

Dancers will learn the basic elements of Jazz Dance and Hip Hop set to today’s popular music. Along with dance technique instruction, they will be given the opportunity to  creatively express themselves through open ended movement.  The class will include stretching exercises, progressions across the floor and sequences of age appropriate choreography that will build week to week.  This fun, lively 45 minute class is offered to students who danced with us last season as well as new students. Class dates:  4/27, 5/4, 5/11, 5/18, 6/1, 6/8

John M. Barry Boys and Girls Club – Sumer Camp

TIME IS RUNNING OUT! LIMITED SPACE STILL AVAILABLE! Come join us for a summer of fun where campers enjoy fun-filled days of swimming, arts and crafts, athletics, special events, fieldtrips and more! Camp begins on June 25th and runs through August 17th. Camp options are available between 8AM and 6PM. The cost for a two-week session ranges from $410 to $500. Community Children’s Clothing drive

Junior Girl Scout Troop 73010 is organizing a community children’s clothing (and other items) drive for Cradles to Crayons.  Clothes needed from newborn through adult medium.  This is a great time to clean out your closets of outgrown but still in good shape clothes.  Go green and help children in need.  Books, baby equipment, toys and games are welcomed too.  The drop-off will be at City Hall during Newton Serves, on April 29th from 9:00 – 3:00.  We did this last year and filled a truck.  This year we are hoping to do better, maybe even fill 2 trucks.  For more information about Cradles to Crayons and donations needed, go to:  http://cradlestocrayons.org/boston .  Other questions about the drive:  feel free to contact – Alicia Bowman  at alicia.bowman@comcast.net

Drive a Senior-Make a Friend!

Newton at Home, a member organization dedicated to helping Newton seniors age in their own homes, is looking for volunteers who can give rides to seniors.  Make a new friend while helping someone get to a doctor’s appointment, the supermarket, a social event or the airport.  Volunteer as much as you can at your convenience, and know that you have made a difference in a Newton senior’s life. You’ll meet interesting people and share great conversation along the way!

Newton at Home is also looking for volunteers to help with marketing communications and public relations.  If you are creative and a good writer and are looking for a wonderful organization to help, look no further!  For more information, call Julie Plaut Mahoney at volcoord@newtonathome.org.

NewtonServes – April 29th

Volunteers are needed to work at Bigelow as part of this year’s Newton Serves community service day on Sunday, April 29, 9:30 am -12:30 pm. We need 15-20 volunteers to beautify the grounds and apply mulch and topsoil to the flower beds. Children, ages 8 and older, are welcome as well.
