One School, One Book: Whole School Celebration for Full Cicada Moon

On Thursday, November 1, Bigelow students will meet with graduate students from the aerospace/aeronautics and astrophysics departments at MIT, and will watch an act, specifically rewritten from the full play for our program, by the Central Square Theatre Company. Ask your students how they liked it!

The goal of Bigelow’s One School, One Book Program is to create a more inclusive community through participation in a common reading experience as a whole school.  Through discussion and advisory activities, staff and students will share a common experience of reading and learning together. More information here. This program is supported by the Bigelow PTO, thanks to your donations.

Early Release Day: Thursday 11/01

A reminder that this Thursday, Nov 1st, is an early release day. All students will be dismissed at 11:30am. There are no late buses, and students should leave promptly at 11:30am. Teachers are continuing their professional development on “courageous conversations about race” during the afternoon.

Mark your calendars for all the early release dates:  12/5, 2/6, 3/21 (5/9 snow day)

TEN Tables is sold out

Thank you to all who bought tickets for our fundraiser! TEN Tables is sold out and online registration is now closed.

If you have registered for the event but have not received a corresponding email after registering, please let us know. We will send reminders to all registered guests with details about the evening during the week.

Sweet temptations are needed! We are welcoming dessert contributions for Saturday night. Please contact bigelowbulldog@gmail.com or Una at una@ethannet.com to make arrangements or if you have any questions about the evening.

We are thankful to all the generous hosts for opening their houses and making this great event happen!

Election Day Bake Sale: Tuesday, Nov 6

The 8th Grade will be hosting an Election Day Bake Sale next Tuesday, November 6th, from 7:00am-8:00pm. This is generally a great success and we have potential to make a lot of money to help fund all sorts of 8th grade events! However, in order for it to be successful, we NEED YOUR HELP! We need parent volunteers to sell the goodies and we need all families to BAKE, BAKE, BAKE! (All Baked Goods should be Nut-Free and Individually Wrapped for efficient sales!)

Please sign up here to volunteer and/or bake!

Please bring your items to the Bigelow Gymnasium entrance on the 6th or drop off in the office during school hours on the 5th. If you have any questions, please contact Miriam Alandydy at miriam.alandydy@gmail.com or 781-424-7340.

Your help is very much appreciated by all the 8th Graders!

The BIGELOW  flu vaccination clinic will be on Wednesday, October 24, 2018. Forms are due tomorrow, Monday, October 22. Each student to be vaccinated must have a parent/guardian complete two forms:
1. Consent/Screening form
2. Vaccine administration record/Insurance form.

Forms are available for download at www.newtonma.gov/flu. You may electronically complete the form, print, sign and return. Please return to the school nurse by Monday, October 22, 2018. More information here.

All-School Dance: Friday, 10/26

From the Principal’s Office

Our first All-School Dance is coming up next Friday, October 26, 6:30-9:00pm. Dance tickets are $6 and will be on sale later this week and next week during lunch in the cafeteria. Students can hang out, play ping pong or other games, and listen and dance to music in the gym. Pizza and snacks will be sold in the cafeteria.

Our dances are open to all Bigelow students in grades 6, 7, and 8. Asking a classmate as a “date” to the dance is unnecessary and discouraged. We want all students to come and have fun with friends. The theme of this dance is Halloween, and costumes (but no masks) are encouraged!

A few parent chaperones are needed. (Harry Potter “Invisibility Cloaks” costumes optional!) Please email Assistant Principal Lucas Mogensen at Lucas_Mogensen@newton.k12.ma.us if you are interested in helping out. Parent chaperones help take tickets, sell refreshments, and supervise the hallways; teachers and counselors chaperone inside the gym.

Bigelow dances are for Bigelow students only, and all school rules apply at this event. The dance ends promptly at 9:00 p.m., and we ask that parents pick up on time at the gym entrance then. For safety reasons, students are not allowed to walk home, even in a group, without parent accompaniment.

Sincerely,
Todd Harrison
Principal
