Bigelow Civics Day 2019

Our 8th Grade students invite you to join us for “Bigelow Civics Day”. See how our change makers are addressing community issues!

  • 1pm – 1:25pm: Welcome and Program Overview
  • 1:30pm – 2:45pm: Student Presentations

Focus issues proposed by the students:

  • addressing students’ mental health
  • restricting underage vaping
  • helping the homeless population
  • increasing affordable rentals in Newton
  • improving nutrition for low-income families
  • reducing academic stress

Parents are welcome to arrive and leave at anytime.
The event is part of the Generation Citizen program led by 8th Grade Social Studies Teachers Ms. Singers and Mr. Swan. Generation Citizen is an action civics curriculum in which students identify issues in their community, research the root cause and then advocate for change.

Recycling Markers

From the Bigelow Green Team

Dear Families,

We’re excited to tell you about a very special program we’re coordinating at Bigelow in conjunction with Crayola. It’s called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing project devised to repurpose used markers rather than sending them to landfills!
The ColorCycle program has repurposed more than 70 tons of expended markers in the United States and Canada since 2013, and uses the most advanced plastic conversion technologies available today to make wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles as well as to generate electricity that can be used to heat homes, cook food, and power vehicles.
All around Bigelow, students and teachers will be collecting used markers that are ready to be discarded. Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house – even non-Crayola brands! Highlighters and dry erase markers can also be included. Drop-off boxes will be located in Ms. Hoffman’s room G08 for your child to deposit the markers.
Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of families like yours across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can continue to keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.
Sincerely,
The Bigelow Green Team

Bigelow Drama Spring Play: “One Little Match”

One Little Match, by the Ghostlight Ensemble, is a two act play entirely written by Bigelow students. Six “unbiased” narrators tell the dramatic story of a bunch of foster kids who want to be together as a family, and their misadventures with law enforcement.

What IS Ghostlight? It’s a Devised Theatre production that will be created by the Ensemble. What is an “ensemble” in this sense? All students cast in the Spring Show, both Tech & Actors. (Not everyone in the ensemble will be performing!) After several weeks of intense team-building activities and group brainstorming/playwriting sessions, a text for a play will be created.

All are invited to the public performances at the school auditorium:

“One Little Match”
Thursday, May 16th, 6 pm
Friday, May 17th, 7 pm
Saturday, May 18h, 7 pm
Tickets $5 at the door

Cafeteria Monitors for announcements

Digital monitors were just installed in the Bigelow cafeteria for relaying announcements to students more efficiently and effectively.

Another source of daily information for students is the morning announcements. They are read by 8th grade students on the intercom at 8:15 AM every day. Parents can access the announcements here.

The cafeteria monitors were purchased by the Bigelow PTO thanks to the support of our community through donations and participation in events.
