Open Gym for Middle Schoolers, Tuesdays 4-6pm

Newton Public Schools is offering students in grades 6, 7 and 8 the opportunity to participate in a FREE recreational fitness program at Day Middle School every Tuesday from 4:00-6:00 P.M., starting April 2nd through the end of the school year.

Based on student interest, the instructor may organize specific activities (e.g., basketball, dance). The program will be supervised by Tyler Wachtelhausen, Physical Education, Health and Wellness Teacher at Day.

Registration is required. Registration Forms are available in every middle school’s Main Office, or you can email Susan Linn for a copy.

 

Veterans Appreciation Event, May 7

On Tuesday May 7th, all are invited to join Mayor Setti D. Warren for the grand opening of the Veterans Center, a first-of-its-kind center dedicated to providing a variety of services for veterans.

This family-friendly, veterans appreciation event will feature numerous attractions, including appearances by former New England Patriot and three-time Super Bowl champion Joe Andruzzi, and Patriot DL Rob Ninkovicha Hoops for our Troops basketball challenge, and the chance to play ball with legends from the Boston Celtics; an evening of comedy featuring comedians Steve Sweeney and Rob Steen; and food and beverages courtesy of Cabots Ice Cream, WholeFoods, Darryl’s Corner Bar and Kitchen and O’Hara’s.

The evening will be emceed by Matt Siegel of KISS 108′s Matty in the Morning.

Friends of the Library Book & Author Lunch, May 10

The 29th annual Friends of the Newton Free Library Book and Author Luncheon will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013. The authors this year are William Landay and Randy Susan Meyers.

Newton Marriott Hotel, 2345 Commonwealth Avenue at Route 128 starting with a cash bar at 11:30 a.m. with luncheon and speakers from 12 noon to 2:45 p.m.

New England Mobile Book Fair will have copies of the authors books for sale and the authors will be signing books.

The price for the luncheon is $45 per person. Sponsorships are $75 and $100. Purchase tickets online at the Newton Free Library’s website or send your check for $45 per person made payable to the Friends of the Newton Free Library to Book and Author Luncheon, PO Box 600533, Newtonville, MA 02460. Specify the names of those who will attend the event & include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Please indicate your preferences for chicken, fish, or vegetarian entree for lunch.

William Landay is the author of the New York Times bestseller Defending Jacob (set in Newton), The Strangler, a Los Angeles Times Favorite Crime Book of the Year, and Mission Flats, winner of the Creasey Memorial Dagger Award for Best First Crime Novel and a Barry Award nominee. A former district attorney who holds degrees from Yale and Boston College Law School, Landay lives in Newton, where he is at work on his next novel of suspense.

Randy Susan Meyers is the author of The Comfort of Lies (Feb 2013) and The Murderer’s Daughters (January 2010//St. Martin’s Press.) Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Randy now lives in Boston with her husband, where she teaches writing seminars for Grub Street Writer’s Center, and is the mother of two grown daughters.

Looking for Participants for Newton’s Memorial Day Parade, May 19

The Newton Veteran’s Council is looking for any interested groups of children to participate in the city’s annual Memorial Day Parade.   A float, a marching band, a sports team, or any other kind of organized group, can march in, or otherwise participate in, the parade.

This year, the parade will be held on Sunday, May 19.  The parade typically commences at 2:00 pm and marches through Auburndale and Nonantum.  The route is about a mile in length. Newton Community Preservation Cmte meets May 9

The agenda of the next meeting of Newton’s Community Preservation Committee includes:

  • historic burying grounds;
  • Newton’s Capital Improvement Plan & CPA funding process;
  • a discussion with with the Board of Aldermen President & Vice President; and
  • Museum Archives – update on anticipated project costs & schedule

The committee will meet Thursday, 9 May, at 7 pm, in City Hall Room 222. The full pre-meeting packet will be available online beginning May 2.

The next deadline for funding requests for FY14 and FY 15 is June 1.
Projects that submit pre-proposals by this deadline can qualify to submit a full proposal next fall for either fy14 or fy15 funding. Full instructions & read-only forms are online under ‘Guidelines & Forms.’

Love, Identity, Parental Authority, Sexuality, Power, and donkey lust (?) are all part of Shakespeare’s most often performed comedy.

Mediatrician coming to Newton

Join Dr. Michael Rich as he discusses the impact of technology on children and teens.  Dr. Rich is the Director of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children’s Hospital in Boston. Topics he will discuss include:

  • Strategies and tips to manage children’s use of technology
  • How to fight the “crowd” mentality 
  • Addictive nature of technology as it relates to children with attention issues
  •  Impact of violence and inappropriate content on child development

The Sunday School for Jewish Studies Open Enrollment

The Sunday School for Jewish Studies is now accepting registrations for grades K-7 for the 2013-2014 school year. The Sunday School is an independent school offering a once-a-week program for children in the greater Boston area for over 40 years. Located at the Oak Hill Middle School in Newton, our school is committed to providing a Jewish education that fosters a strong sense of Jewish identity for children and families with diverse traditions of Jewish observance. Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation is available but not required, and students may enter in any grade. Interfaith and nontraditional families are welcome.

The Newton Mustangs offer football and cheer for all children in grades 2 through 8. There are no try outs and all players are placed on teams according to grade.

There will be a Kick, Punt, Pass and Cheer Clinic on June 21st – 6:00 p.m. at the West Suburban YMCA. Practice the basics or grow your skills in football and cheerleading.
