Little League’s Summer 2014 Sandlot Season now open

Registration for Newton SouthEast Little League’s Summer 2014 Sandlot Season is now open!

Following the tremendous success of the Sandlot program last year, NSELL is pleased to announce registration for the Summer 2014 Sandlot Program is open.

Instead of forming teams with set rosters and coaching staffs they will instead be conducting “Sandlot Baseball Nights” and will provide shirts, hats, umpires, coaches and other game-related logistics. The objective is to give everyone a chance to have fun playing competitive baseball in a well organized environment. They’ll set up teams on site each game night. All participants must be registered for “Sandlot Baseball” in order to play on a given night.

To be able to play in this short-season program a player must be age eligible for the Spring 2014 Little League Program and have been a member of a Newton (SouthEast, North, West or Central) Little League Majors Division team for the 2014 Spring Season.

Minor Division players age 9-11 who are likely to be eligible for the majors in Spring 2015 are welcome to play. 12 year old players who have graduated from Spring Little League Majors Division are eligible for this program.

The season is expected to run from the last week of June through the middle of August, on Tuesday and Thursday evening. Teams will be made up at the field of available players. The goal is to have fun by playing pickup baseball.

The program cost is $75. Refunds may be requested before June 22, 2014 minus a $20 administrative fee. No refunds will be made after that date. Registration is limited to 75 participants and is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

They also need coaching volunteers! Please register online under the Coaching program.

Volunteers are needed for Recycle Sticker Project!

Green Decade Newton, in collaboration with Newton’s Department of Public Works, is seeking numerous volunteers (16 years and older) to walk in pairs around Newton’s neighborhoods, while adhering “recycling education stickers” onto all residential green bins in the spring and summer months. Maps will be provided and the work will be conducted primarily during the morning hours. The “Recycle Sticker Project” will help remind all Newton residents of the items that may or may not be placed in our green bins.

Funding for the stickers has been provided by Green Decade Newton, Whole Foods Markets Newton and Waste Management. The goal is to raise awareness about recycling, not only to benefit our environment, but also to reap substantial financial savings on the cost of disposing the City’s trash. Become a Host Family for a Newton South International Student

Each school year Newton South High School hosts up to 20 international students through Educatius International. These students come from many different countries – Italy, Brazil, Chile, Norway, and China to name a few. Visiting students go through an application process before they are selected- they are smart, mature, and passionate about intercultural learning opportunities. Our international students bring so much to the hallways of NSHS and our Newton community.

Host families are to provide a warm and supportive home and family environment; students should become part of your family. We welcome any family (with or a without a high school student of their own) who is excited about this opportunity. Educatius offers a monthly stipend of $700.00 for each student placed in their home and each family can host up to 2 students ($1,400.00). Educatius also works with host families to match them with a student who shares the family’s interests and values. Hosting a student can provide you with amazing opportunities and lifelong friendships.

Open your heart and your home…share our unique community! Invite a NSHS international student into your home. These students will be arriving for the September 2014 school year.

To learn more and apply to become a host family, please contact Jodi Del Razo at Jodi.delrazo@educatius.org or call her at 617-543-8626.
