Free Teen Expo at Newton North, Jan. 22

Teens and parents/guardians are invited to the Just Think: Teens Making Smart Choices expo for participative, informative exhibits; live musical performances; free refreshments; and fun.

Thursday, January 22, 5:00 – 7:30pm

Meet 30+ community exhibitors who help teens navigate high school pressures in order to stay safe and healthy. Get information about everything from driving and pedestrian safety to healthy eating and positive body image to stress reduction and mental health support. Find answers to your questions about the expo and see the exhibitor list at www.NorthPTSO.org.

Summer camp auction

Get ready for the Bowen PTO’s first-ever online summer camp auction! Starting January 5th at midnight, you can go online to bid on a wide variety of day and overnight summer camps and other great experiences for your family. You’ll get a great deal on the camp of your choice and help Bowen meet their fundraising goals for the playground revitalization campaign.

Newton Community Preservation Cmte. funding deadline

Projects for affordable housing, historic resources, open space, or recreation land that would like to be considered for a grant in the fall of 2015 must contact Newton Community Preservation Committee staff by February 1st, 2015, to request the required in-person orientation meeting.

Funding guidelines are available on the Newton CPC website. Please note that online forms are just samples; we create a customized, fillable form for each proposal. Contact program manager Alice Ingerson at 617.796.1144 or aingerson <at> newtonma <dot>gov.

Art Classes for Children, Adults at Arsenal Ctr for the Arts

The Arsenal Center for the Arts begins the new year with an exciting program of winter art classes and workshops for adults and children beginning the weeks of January 12 and January 19. The full listing and schedule of course offerings is available online.

Adult offerings include a range of media and techniques for both beginning and more advanced students, with both morning and evening classes: Art Sampler, Acrylics, Expressive Watercolor, Monoprints, Ceramics, Drawing, Folk Assemblage, Poetry through the Four Seasons, Jewelry-Crafting and more.

Children’s classes (offered for four age ranges through teens) include Clay for Kids, Let’s Paint, Mixed-Media, Comics & Cartoons, Wheelthrowing, Intensive Drawing and more. Fun Parent/Child workshops for ages 2+ are also available.

Classes are held at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street in Watertown, with free parking and access to public transportation. Scholarships and Membership discounts are available. To register online, visit the Center’s website or call 617-923-0100, ext. 8309.

Free BADMINTON for kids in grade 6-12 at the Hyde Community Gym, 90 Lincoln St. Newton Highlands. Stop by and play. No registration needed. Bring friends and join the fun!

Free Drop-in Art & Theatre Workshop, Jan. 17

The Arsenal Center for the Arts offers free drop-in art and theatre workshops on Saturday, January 17 and February 21, from 10am – noon.

Experiment with paint, paper, collage, performance, and movement. Use your imagination to express yourself, make your own special masterpiece, and explore theatre games. Different projects and games will be offered each class. The program is perfect for families and children. More information is available online.
