The Newton Schools Foundation will kick off its 50th anniversary year on January 21st with the fourth annual Newton Inspires: An Evening of Ideas and Community. Since 2011, Newton Inspires has been uniting Newton residents for an evening of discussion with some of Newton’s brightest, most accomplished and most interesting community members.

This year’s program features headliners Olympic gold medalist and physician Dr. Tenley Albright; MIT professor, engineer and inventor Dr. Robert Langer; former White House staffer and Huffington Post Chief of Staff Herbie Ziskend NNHS ’03; and New York Times bestselling author and journalist Mitchell Zuckoff.

The 2014 program will take place Wednesday, January 21st, 7:00 – 9:30 pm at Newton South High School. The cost is $10 for Newton residents, $15 for non-residents. Space is limited, so advance registration is highly recommended. To register, go to www.NewtonSchoolsFoundation.org

Boy Scout Troop Open House

Boy Scout Troop 182 in Wellesley would like to invite interested boys in grades 5 through 12 to an open house on February 8th to celebrate Scouting’s 105th anniversary. The open house will be held from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m. in the Assembly Room of the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, 207 Washington Street. No previous scouting experience is required.

Troop 182 has been serving the youth of Wellesley and surrounding towns since 1913. Boys enjoy a balanced program of camping and other outdoor activities, community service, summer programs and weekly meetings on Sunday evenings. Since the troop’s founding, more than 120 Scouts have attained the Eagle Scout Award, Scouting’s highest rank.

Community Open Gyms

Did you know that thanks to a grant from The Newton Partnership and funding from the Carol M. White Physical Education Program the Boys & Girls Club’s gym is open to the general public twice per week? Anyone ages 6 to 18 is welcome to join and make use of the Club’s gym equipment. Come on down for flexible, supervised, organized activity.

JCC Kid’s Choice February School Vacation Program

From sports and swimming to arts, dance, cooking and rock climbing, kids have their choice of activities at the JCC Kid’s Choice February Vacation Program.  For boys and girls entering grades K-6 (and CITs in grades 7-9 at a reduced rate).

Special highlights include JCC Magic Ark performance of Toying with Science, field trip to Wheelock Family Theatre to see Pinocchio and Purim Carnival.

Held at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC, 333 Nahanton Street, Newton.  Monday-Friday, February 16th – 20th from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Come for one day or as many as you would like. Everyone welcome.

Affordable Housing Proposal for February 12th Public Hearing

The CPC has scheduled a proposal for affordable housing on Taft Avenue, West Newton ($584,029 of CPA funds requested by CAN-DO) for a public hearing on February 12th. Written comments received by January 23rd can be included in the CPC’s pre-meeting packet. The full proposal and its attachments are online from the Proposals & Projects – Pending section of the program website, at www.newtonma.gov/cpa.

NCE Debate Institute

Do you think your child would benefit from debate? Critical thinking skills cultivated by debate are important for academic success, and recent studies demonstrate that children who participate in debate programs have 30-60% increased admission rates to elite colleges. But most of all, debate is a whole lot of fun; it’s a great way for kids to meet new friends and talk about important ideas.

This summer, the NCE Debate Institute will be holding a two week workshop for students who want to try debating. NCE Instructors are all former debate champions (including three MA State Champions) with years of coaching experience. The NCE curriculum covers every aspect of debate — from public speaking, to argumentative writing, to advanced research skills. Open to all MA students. Beginners are welcome.
