Mother’s Day Weekend Community Event and Action

Did you know that Newton has over 400 natural gas leaks from aging, underground pipes? These leaks release methane, contribute to climate change, harm our future, waste energy, and damage human health and trees. Consumers pay the cost.

Join Newton Mothers Out Front and other allies to tag the gas leaks in our town and help spread the word about this invisible hazard! Come to a rally at the Newton Free Library to hear a few words about the campaign and then head out to tag the leaks. They’ll give you the materials you need to tag.

Newton Free Library, Homer Street Entrance, 330 Homer Street
Saturday May 13th, 1:30 p.m. (rain date May 20).
1:30 pm Gather to learn how gas leaks harm us and what we can do.
2:00 pm Join a team to tag leaks near local schools, parks, and village centers.

Please RSVP: Send email w/subject Tag Event to mothersoutfrontnewton@gmail.com or go to www.facebook.com/NewtonMOF/ (go to Events, click Tag Newton’s Gas Leaks, click Going)

This is a family-friendly event. Co-Sponsors include 350 MASS Newton Node, HEET, Green Newton, Bike Newton, Newton Tree Conservancy, and League of Women Voters Newton. For more information on leaks throughout Massachusetts, see: https://www.heetma.org/squeaky-leak/natural-gas-leaks-maps/

Newton South Sustainability Presentation

Newton South’s senior sustainability class invites you to learn how you can make your grocery shopping eco-friendly! This presentation will aim to educate consumers about the labels on their groceries and what those labels really mean when it comes to the product inside. Students will speak about these labels in terms of the environment and answer which labels indicate sustainably produced food as well as the sustainable practices that local grocery stores have in place when it comes to acquiring their meat products.

Students will also talk about nutrition and how to go about achieving proper nutrition in your daily life. All of these questions will be answered in the context of Newton and how to go about making sustainable grocery and nutritional choices given the options available to the typical Newton resident.

Annual Seedling Sale

It’s time to get your seedlings at the Newton Community Farm Annual Seedling Sale and start your home garden! Come to the Farm to get your seedlings for vegetables, herbs, flowers, and that favorite summer crop, tomatoes!

The greenhouse is full of seedlings, started from the same seeds that they use to grow seedlings for the produce they sell. So get the varieties you know are great and support your local community farm.

If you would like to avoid the crowds, or make sure you get the varieties you want, send in a pre-order — They will pack it up, and you may pick it up during the Seedling Sale. Please use the pre-order form. Pre-orders must be postmarked by May 13th and are only available to Friends of the Farm. Interested in becoming a Friend of the Farm? You can sign up here.
