Youth Fitness Program

As children start to play sports at increasingly competitive levels, the game changes and becomes more physical. Flight Performance & Fitness has put together a program specially designed for youths ages 10 and up. With proper strength training and conditioning, kids learn how to move properly and safely, which in turn helps reduce the risk that comes from overuse injuries.  Every session is open to all kids age 10 and over.

TRICK OR TREAT AT HISTORIC NEWTON’S MUSEUMS
As you make the rounds with your children on Halloween night, please stop by the Jackson Homestead and Museum and the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds for an assortment of Halloween candy from many time periods and free museum admission tickets that may be used throughout the fall. Enjoy trick-or-treating at the historic homes that are part of the neighborhood. Admission: Free

DELTA-SILLY MUSIC
Bring the whole family to the Durant-Kenrick House to dance, sing, and play along with the Delta-Silly tunes of Jeremy Lyons. Jeremy plays folk ballads, railroad tunes, campfire songs, food songs, car songs, dancing songs and more on the banjo, guitar, harmonica, ukulele, kazoo, jaw harp, rhythm bones and more – some of the instruments featured in our November 18 Jug Band Giants concert. The music starts at 2:00 pm, but come as early as 1:00 pm to make your own instrument to play along with Jeremy!

Admission: $5 per person; free for Historic Newton members

What’s Happening at the Y

Please come to a “Night Under the Big Top” featuring cocktails, live & silent auctions, dinner, dancing, circus games and entertainment and hosted by the fabulous Jenny Johnson of NESN’s “Dining Playbook”. The Y’s Annual Gala supports local families in need by providing financial assistance for:

  • Child Care – Keeping children from Preschool to High School safe and engaged
  • Youth & Adult Sports – Instructional classes and sports leagues that reinforce skills and encourage teamwork
  • Programs for Seniors – Fitness classes, wellness programs and social outings

Inspired by the Atlantic Monthly piece entitled “Have smartphones destroyed a generation?”, the forum will provide information and resources on the impact of technology and social media, as well as the opportunity to discuss the role of educators and families in navigating this space.

Free Executive Function Workshop

Newton Youth Services invites you to join Dan Levine and Melissa Wilson of Engaging Minds, an after school learning center with locations in Newton and Wayland, for a workshop designed specifically for parents and students together.

In this workshop participants will learn strategies to help your student better manage their nightly homework, planning and time management strategies for both short-term and long-term assignments – and for life, strategies to help your student get “unstuck” when they have trouble initiating tasks, organizational strategies to help your student keep track of their papers, assignments, and belongings, and more! This workshop is free and open to the public.

The Middle School families’ session will be on November 13th, 6:30 – 8:00 pm, and the High School families’ on December 7th, 6:30 – 8:00 pm. Both events take place in Druker Auditorium in the Newton Free Library.

Duer McLanahan, a NSHS parent of a sophomore, is a native English language speaking teacher-translator offering his clearly-spoken fluency in both English and Mandarin Chinese: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing.

This instruction includes guidance in writing and revising academic papers and report and thesis writing, revising and translation alchemy. Mandarin to English; English to Mandarin.

Kindergarten through High School students of all nationalities in Newton are welcome to improve their English and/or Mandarin level(s) in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing fluency.
