Newton’s 4th of July Celebrations

Kids’ Morning
July 4th, 10:00 am – Noon
Newton Centre Playground at Tyler Terrace
Free event for children ages 3 – 12 years. Children and families are invited to join in the Grande Pet Parade, Decorated Doll Carriage Promenade, Teddy Bear Parade and Foot Races. Free ice cream, candy and drinks complete the morning celebration – courtesy of Cabot’s Ice Cream and Trader Joe’s.

Afternoon/Evening Events
July 4th 1:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Albemarle Field
The fun continues with kiddie amusement rides, craft vendor booths, food vendor booths, face painting and other childrens’ activities. There is free music and dancing 6:00 – 9:00 pm on the Main Stage.

At 9:00 pm, don’t miss the grand finale…a fantastic fireworks display! Visit www.newtoncommunitypride.org for details.

Special Note: This year, the amusement rides are also open on Saturday & Sunday, July 2nd and 3rd from 10:00 am – 8:00 pm. Check www.newtoncommunitypride.org for details.

It’s not too late to Honor Teachers!

You still have time to do something special for your child’s teacher or other staff this year! Make a donation in their names to Newton Schools Foundation’s Honor Thy Teacher program. Teachers, Principals and the Superintendent will be notified of this honor, and names of those honored will appear in the Newton TAB.

Go to www.newtonschoolsfoundation.org all summer long to donate online and learn more about the programs that NSF funds. Donations are tax-deductible and go toward enhancing the quality of education throughout Newton’s schools.

High School Start Time Year End Report

The High School Start Time Year End Report, which will be presented to Newton School Committee on June 20th, has been posted online. The report contains:

STEAM Expo

Join in for an interactive afternoon at the library and get involved in the rebirth of Do-It-Yourself! The STEAM Expo is a gathering of tech enthusiasts, traditional crafters, artists, musicians, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers and students (like the Ligerbots!). Save the Date and Plan Your Summer Reading:

Understanding Our Differences will hold its 5th Annual Family Book Event with a disability theme on October 18th at 7:00 pm at Newton South High School Auditorium. The featured author is Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, who will talk about and sign her award winning middle grade novel, The War That Saved My Life.

The book is a moving story of triumph against all odds by a girl with a physical disability, set during World War II. Admission will be free for children and NPS teachers and staff. Dance Studio Open House

All That Jazz is now accepting registration for the 2016-2017 school year, as well as summer classes. The proud winner of the Newton Tab Readers Choice Awards for Best Children’s Dance Studio in Newton since 2011, they specialize in building self-esteem and creating a warm, supportive and nurturing environment for all children as they learn the art of dance. The director, Miss Deb Lifson Vogel is a Newton native and currently has children in the Newton Public Schools.

Spring Open House: June 13th 4:00-6:00 pm!

First Lego League Info Night for 4th to 8th grade Parents

The Newton LigerBots are hosting a First Lego League (FLL) Info Night. FLL is the FIRST LEGO robotics competition for fourth through eighth graders. In addition to building and programming LEGO robots, each year’s themed FLL challenge includes a project for which team members brainstorm and present creative solutions to real life problems. This event is aimed primarily at parents but kids are welcome. At FLL Info Night parents and kids can learn more about the FLL program. Current LigerBots students and coaches who have participated in FLL in the past will lead a presentation with general information on FLL as well as on how to start your own team. There will be demonstrations of EV3 robots and people to answer any questions you may have. Email fll@ligerbots.com for more information.
