The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Boston section is partnering with the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston (ATMOB) and MIT Lincoln Laboratory for a Space Night! Girls in Grades 2 – 8 will be exposed to various hands-on workshops bringing out the excitement of space exploration, and the AMTOB will set up their telescopes for observation of the dynamic night sky! $5 registration fee includes snack and workshop supplies. The League of Women Voters Newton is participating in a national League education study on The Role of the Federal Government in Public Education.  An informational meeting will be held on Monday, October 3 from 7:00-9:30 p.m. in the Newton City Hall cafeteria.  We are honored to have David Fleishman, Superintendent, and Ann Koufman, Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning of the Newton Public Schools as resources for our education study discussion. The study includes questions on Common Core Standards and Equity and Funding. The meeting is open to the public, especially potential League members. Brookline Music School hosts an Open House & Instrument Petting Zoo on Sunday, October 16, 2011 from 1:00 to 3:00pm. Join BMS for this interactive and fun day of sampling several different instruments and enjoying live music by a world-renown faculty and outstanding students at the Lincoln School Pumpkinfest noon to 4:00pm.

Does your child want to play a musical instrument, but is unsure which one? We have the answer! At our Instrument Petting Zoos, children and adults are given the opportunity to listen to and play a wide range of instruments, including woodwinds, brass, strings, guitar, piano, drums and music technology. Children puff their cheeks in anticipation of playing the wind instruments, while others try their hands at the strings or hammer on the drums and piano. Several instruments are often larger than the children, which dos not dissuade their curiosity or ability!

Pumpkinfest is on Sunday, Oct 16 from noon to 4:00pm. It’s an autumn festival on the Lincoln School grounds with games and amusements, a silent auction, food, pumpkins, and this year, entertainment courtesy of the Brookline Music School! Pumpkinfest is the Lincoln School’s biggest fundraiser, making a host of programs and services for the Lincoln community possible.

Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program looking for advocates

The Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program in Newton is looking for committed and dedicated child advocates to present its personal safety curriculum in local elementary schools.

Join up with current and experienced volunteer Prevention Specialists to teach children to recognize and respond to verbal, physical and sexual assault and abuse. Potential volunteers are community members who believe that children have the right to information, skills and the support of adults. We offer a flexible schedule to volunteers who enjoy teamwork and can make a yearlong commitment of three or four mornings a month.

To make it easier for people with busy schedules to train we have decided to offer 4 short morning sessions, 9 am to noon on W and F in Oct. The dates are 12, 14, 19 and 21. We are reserving the option to extend each session by an hour each day depending on the demographics of the trainees.

Part 1 of the training will prepare trainees to present one of the three facilitations and participate in all of the role plays. Part 2, on Review Time will be scheduled for late November, early December, based on the trainees’ availability.
