Seeking help for upcoming Indian Festival

The Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs is hosting an Indian Festival at the Newton Cultural Center on Saturday, Nov. 10th from 10am – 5pm. It is going to be a wonderful event showcasing many of the tastes, music, dance, games and crafts of India. One of the elements is a fashion show.

We are looking for Indian families who would be willing to show off the attire or costume from their region. The fashion show will take place at 3pm. Please contact Jeannie Smith at 617-527-8283 if you would like to participate. We would be delighted to include you.

Celebrate Fall in Newton at the 37th annual Harvest Fair in Newton on Newton Centre Green, at Langley Rd. & Centre St.

Saturday, Oct. 13, 10am – 5pm, kiddie amusement rides, sand art and face painting.
Sunday, Oct. 14, 10am – 5pm — something for everyone! Kiddie amusement rides, free pumpkin decorating, 150 craft booths, delicious ethnic and American food, the “Big Feat” Memorial Walk of the Circle of Caring at Hospice of the Good Shepherd, and live entertainment all day. Performances are by local dancers and musicians.

Be part of Newton Highlands street art project

Make your mark on Newton — be part of Newton’s first sanctioned Street Art Project!

Join Newton Highlands merchants and artists in creating the city’s first-ever Road Mural on Lincoln Street. Painters in grades 3-8 are needed to help our adult artists fill in eco-themed murals to highlight all that is “green” in Newton–and make the street more fun and safer for walkers!

Choose a one-hour time slot on Sunday, October 14, between 1 pm and 4 pm. All traffic will be foot only for the duration of the painting. Adult helpers welcome.

Newton Cultural Festivals: Indian, Chinese, Latin

We have had a Russian Festival, we are in the early planning stages of a Chinese Festival for February 10 and a Latin Festival for March 23. We can plan these festivals more effectively with the help of families from these cultures and we would like to invite you to our planning meetings. Please join us at the Newton Cultural Center, 225 Nevada Street, Newtonville. The meeting for the Chinese Festival is October 16 at 7:45pm. The meeting for the Latin Festival is October 22 at 6:30pm. Navigating the Rocky Road of Adolescence – Middle School Years

Join other parents of 6th – 8th graders and a professional facilitator to explore the many changes that occur during adolescence, and how they affect relationships at home and school.

Discuss relevant topics such as promoting healthy choices, setting realistic limits and appropriate consequences; understanding when and how to negotiate; dealing with changes and crises (e.g., divorce); identifying risk factors for anxiety and depression; handling experimentation with sex, alcohol, drugs, and learning to “let go” while maintaining family connections.

Group begins on Tuesday, October 23 from 7:00-8:30 pm and runs weekly until Nov. 13. There is a $20 fee for the 4-week series (Oct 23, 30, Nov 6 & 13). Financial assistance is available for those who need it.

Registration for NAA Youth Basketball (grades 3-12)

Registration is now open for the Newton Athletic Association (NAA) youth basketball leagues. Leagues are for boys and girls from 3rd through 12th grade. All players are welcome regardless of ability or experience.  A mandatory evaluation clinic will be held on October 21 (make-up date on October 22) in order to create and balance the teams.

Season includes 10-12 games per league, played on either Saturdays or Sundays.  Practices are one night each week, Sunday-Thursday.  Program runs mid-November through id-March.  Fee: $125 ($95 for each additional player from one family).  Information and application online at www.naabasketball.orgApplication deadline Oct. 20th. 

The Changing and Challenging Landscape of College Admissions

Over the past decade applying to college has become more competitive and complicated. Yet new opportunities exist at colleges for many types of students. Families need to be aware of the new rules for college admissions and how to evaluate both the admission and departure process (i.e., will my student get a job?).

The Newton Free Library hosts college admissions counselor Carol Kinlan for a talk that will cover important aspects of the college planning process.

Doing Good by Shredding (Documents)

The Memorial-Spaulding PTO is hosting a fundraising “shred” on Saturday, October 27 from 10 am to 1 pm in the school parking lot (250 Brookline St.). PROSHRED – the most experienced document destruction company in the US – will have a shredder truck on site to receive and destroy your material.

Bring stapled and unstapled papers, files, check books, CDs, financial and other statements, electronic media, x-ray files, and more.

You can even watch via monitor as your documents get destroyed in real time, and 100% of the shredded materials will be recycled and made into other paper products.

The cost is $10 per box and all proceeds will benefit the PTO and school.
