Volunteers Needed to lead Magazine Drive

We are in urgent need of at least 2 volunteers to co-chair the Holiday Magazine Drive. The Drive is scheduled to kick off on Nov 22ndLast year, this Magazine Drive raised $5000 for Bigelow. It’s a big and important fundraiser- please consider helping to lead this one!!

Lisa Moore from Great American Opportunities, had offered to make this a very easy fundraiser for the coordinators. She will meet with the chair and volunteers and review the process step by step.  She also has a team that can provide support with tallying orders and prize distribution, among other things.

Please consider helping us. Email Melanie Varady at melvarady@gmail.com to volunteer.

Thank you!!

Young Adult event – meet the author

Young Adult event with Heather Terrell, author of RELIC: The Books of Eva I.

Ages 11 & up welcome.

Relic: for fans of Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games: high fantasy and dystopia meet in this high-stakes tale of a civilization built on lies and the girl who single-handedly brings it down.

Heather Terrell is a lawyer with more than ten years’ experience as a litigator at two of the country’s premier law firms and for Fortune 500 companies. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Boston College with a focus in History, and a cum laude graduate of the Boston University School of Law. While practicing as a lawyer, Heather dreamed of a fantastical job unraveling the larger mysteries of time and uncovering the truths lurking in legend and myth — and found it when she tried her hand at writing. She first wrote the historical novels The Chrysalis and The Map Thief, which will appear in more than ten countries, as well as Brigid of Kildare. She made the transition to young adult fiction with the series Fallen Angel — and continues it now with The Books of Eva.

From the Nurse’s Office

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.  The combined efforts of the Jordan Bennett Weiss Fund and the City of Newton Health and Human Services Department are working to educate the community about the warning signs of diabetes.

Knowledge of the warning signs is the greatest weapon against this disease.  Sometimes the symptoms may be obvious and sometimes they are not.  Symptoms which might appear to be unrelated, when viewed in the context of the list of warning signs, may suggest intervention.  Please familiarize yourself with the warning signs/symptoms of diabetes. Newton Cradles to Crayons Drive

To ensure that 500 local children in-need have the essentials to be safe and warm this winter, Mayor Setti Warren invites Newton community members to join in the Newton Community-wide Collection effort in support of Cradles to Crayons. Something as simple as cleaning out your closets can have an enormous impact. The coat that your daughter has outgrown or the pants that are now too short for your son can bring warmth to the life of a child.

From November 2nd – 17th, you can make a difference by dropping off new and like-new children’s items – clothing, winter coats, shoes, books, toys, and baby gear – in the 24-hour access collection unit brightly marked by Cradles to Crayons banners in the Newton City Hall parking lot across from the Public Library.

At this time of year, non-profit Cradles to Crayons receives hundreds of requests each week for essential items like clothing, shoes and boots, hats and gloves, and coats. The power of working together as a community will enable Cradles to Crayons to fulfill the requests from thousands of children across the Commonwealth who would otherwise be forced to go without these critical winter items.
