You are invited to attend a public forum on the Student Assignment Review. There will be draft boundary change scenario maps available for review and a brief description of the context and process to-date. The focus of the forum will be on your comments and feedback which are important to this process. Please join the Student Assignment Working Group for this important opportunity to provide feedback. All scenarios are in draft stage and are subject to change.

The Stars Align – A Music for Food Benefit Concert

The stars align in Newton as Boston’s top musicians come together for a fabulous program of Bartok and Ravel Duos, and Brahms G minor Piano Quartet. Proceeds to support Newton’s four food pantries with the help of Music for Food, an organization founded by Grammy award winning violist, Kim Kashkashian.

MFF sets forth a model applicable in every community to raise resources and awareness in the fight against hunger and food insecurity. Now in its 5th year, Music for Food has created over 150,000 meals from the efforts of 75 international artists and ensembles.

Green Newton Celebrating

Green Decade Newton will commemorate its 25 years of work for the health and safety of Newton’s environment, an award from the EPA, and its new name – “Green Newton” – at its 25th Anniversary Celebration on June 11th. All are invited to attend.

6th Annual NewtonPAC Special Educator Awards

Newton Parent Advisory Council for Special Education is pleased to announce the
6th Annual NewtonPAC Special Educator Awards!
The Special Educator Awards are given by parent or guardian nomination to staff members who have done exceptional work with children with special needs (those on IEPs and 504 plans). Nominations are now open for the awards!

Please note that the awards do not identify you or your child by name, to preserve the child’s confidentiality. Only the honoree is given the name of the family who nominated him or her. Please send your nomination to 2015pacawards@gmail.com, with the following information:

A short nomination about why your nominee is so special.

Please try to include details and examples if you can, try to not just say, “Miss Smith is great!” Please keep the nominating paragraph to 3 sentences ( to be read aloud at the ceremony). If you like, you may also include a longer nomination or a letter to your nominee, which will not be read out loud and will only be given to the nominee, with their award.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
• The deadline for the awards is June 1st. (In the past few years, about 80% of the awards nominations have come in within a day of the deadline. Please, please try to just do your nomination now, it really lowers the stress for the awards committee! Plus it’s nice for your honoree to know sooner rather than later, so that they can plan to attend. Many honorees bring family members and friends to see them receive their awards.)

• In past years it has been possible to be flexible about the deadline. Please note that since programs will be printed this year, they will NOT be extending the deadline. Please get your nominations in on time!

Brain study volunteers needed

Research coordinator in the Child and Adolescent Mood Disorders Laboratory at McLean Hospital is currently inviting mothers and their 12-14 year old healthy daughters to participate in our study on how the brain changes during adolescence. This study is trying to uncover patterns of brain activity that may lead to the development of depression later in adolescence — that way, they may be able to do a better job of predicting depression, and, potentially, treating it.

Summer rowing on the Charles at CRI Co-Ed Clinics

Summer rowing for ages 12-18!

Learn to Row – Everyone begins here: covers a complete introduction to the sport of rowing including rowing/coxing technique as well as boat safety. The goal of the program is to develop a solid foundation of skills, taught in a fun and supportive environment. Clinics run in 2-week sessions, morning or afternoon, throughout the summer. Clinics begin June 15th.

Skills Development: for rowers who have completed Learn to Row and want to continue building their skills and improving rowing technique. The clinics will focus on improving rowing skill and preparing rowers for future competition. Clinics run in 2-week sessions, morning or afternoon, throughout the summer. Financial aid available.
