Seeking Teens for Youth Advisory Program

Do you know a student in grade 6 through 12 who could benefit from participating in a program to work on personal fitness goals and nutritional knowledge?

Open Enrollment for the Sunday School for Jewish Studies

The Sunday School for Jewish Studies is accepting registrations for grades K-7 for the 2012-13 school year. The Sunday School is an independent school offering a once-a-week program for children in the greater Boston area for over 40 years. Located at the Oak Hill Middle School, our school is committed to providing a Jewish education that fosters a strong sense of Jewish identity for children and families with diverse traditions of Jewish observance. Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation is available but not required, and students may enter in any grade. Interfaith and nontraditional families are welcome. Newton Highlands Street Art project needs help, Sept. 30

Make your mark on Newton — be part of Newton’s first sanctioned Street Art Project! Join Newton Highlands merchants and artists in creating the city’s first-ever Road Mural on Lincoln Street.

Painters in grades 3-8 are needed to help our adult artists fill in eco-themed murals to highlight all that is “green” in Newton–and make the street more fun and safer for walkers! Chose a one-hour time slot on Sunday, Sept. 30, between 1 pm and 4 pm.

All traffic will be foot only for the duration of the painting. Adult helpers welcome. Sign up for a painting time on our website.

Events during Walk-Bike week, Sept. 28-30

Bike Newton, which promotes bicycling as a viable method of transportation in Newton and advocates for safe, convenient biking for all, is sponsoring events for Walk-Bike Week:

Bike Friday, for commuters traveling into Boston, on Friday, Sept. 28. Begin at Newton City Hall, meet additional riders in Newtonville and Watertown Sq and end at the Sports Club near Boston Common. Meet at 6:45 AM, leave at 7 AM, arrive Boston 8:15 AM. Learn a safe route for your commute to Boston.

Bike Census, Saturday, Sept 29 and Wednesday, Oct 4. Volunteers are needed to help with the census (i.e. counting bike riders at locations around the city). Sign up at  bikenewton.org, click on ‘Do something’ and ‘Volunteer’. The census will be done on Saturday, Sept 29 12-1 PM and on Wed. Oct 3 8-9 AM and 4-5 PM.

Sunday Morning Weekly No-Rider-Left-Behind rides 11 AM, Sept. 30. Each ride goes to an interesting destination in the city. See schedule and routes at bikenewton.org. Meet at Homer St main library at 10:45 AM, with a bike in good working condition and a helmet. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult and be able to ride 7 – 10 miles.

Jazz, Hip Hop and Creative Dance, ages 3-5

Children, ages 3-5, will learn the basic elements of jazz dance and hip hop set to today’s popular music in this fun, lively class. Along with dance technique instruction, they will be given the opportunity to  creatively express themselves through open ended movement.  Class includes stretching exercises, progressions across the floor and sequences of age appropriate choreography that will build week to week.

All That Jazz dance studio now registering

All That Jazz Dance Studio, proud winner two years in a row of the Newton Tab Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Dance Studio in Newton and Regional Gold for Newton, Needham and Wellesley, is still accepting registration for the 2012-2013 school year.  All classes are taught by experienced professional dance educators who love sharing their gift of dance with their students.  Director Deb Lifson Vogel teaches many of the classes herself and is a Newton native and current Ward School parent.

Art Classes for children & adults at Arsenal Center for the Arts

Registration is still open for fall and winter classes for children and adults at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown. From “clay for kids” to mixed media and jewelry classes, there’s something for every child ages 3-teen. Adults classes include printmaking, drawing, collage, and much more!
