The Season of Giving

It’s that time of year and your inbox is probably filled with worthy organizations asking for donations. The Bigelow Middle School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is one cause that doesn’t get more personal: our kids’ education. As parents and guardians of Bigelow students, we are all members of the PTO, an organization that is well worth supporting.

Why give to the PTO?

  • We underwrite programs that the Newton Public School’s budget does not cover, such as Creative Arts and Sciences and classroom technology.
  • We supplement supplies for the classrooms.
  • We offer field trip scholarships.
  • We provide assistance to Bigelow families who have fallen under unfortunate circumstances.
  • We serve as an important communication channel between the school and parents.
  • We help build the community that makes Bigelow a special place for our children.

Please support these important programs with your gift to Bigelow PTO online, via Venmo (@BigelowPTONewton), or by check (payable to Bigelow PTO).
Matching gifts are a great way to maximize your donation! Some companies will double or triple your gift to education.

White Bird: One School One Book 2023

Last week Bigelow students discussed White Bird by R.J. Palacio and participated in several activities as part of the One School, One Book Program.

Students began the day by identifying and discussing “Moments of Greatness” within the book. Moments of Greatness is acknowledging an act of kindness or when someone stands up in support of someone or against an injustice. Next, students heard from guest speakers who survived the Holocaust, Dr. Hans Fisher and Werner Salinger. Finally, students were given an opportunity to reflect and debrief with guided question.

Thank you to everyone involved in organizing and planning this event for our students, especially Ms. Guzzi, for so thoughtfully putting together this learning experience!

Finally, thank you to all Bigelow Families for your support of the PTO! It is through your support that the Bigelow PTO is able to underwrite special programs like One School, One Book for our students.

Funds raised by the PTO, thanks to your donations, are used to run events and programs that support our students, our teachers, and our school community.

Message from Bigelow Teachers

Hello Bigelow PTO parents,

The staff at Bigelow would like to say THANK YOU, to all of you who stood out on November 3rd in support of our ongoing fight for a fair contract.  Your support really means a lot to every one of us.

For those parents who were unable to attend, but are looking for ways to help the educators of Newton get a fair contract, here are a few things you could do:

  • Sign up for the Newton Parent Educator Collaborative Here
  • Request a lawn sign Here
  • Sign up to deliver a public comment at a future school committee meeting, stating why you think the educators of Newton deserve a fair contract Here
  • Email or call the School Committee and demand that they stop playing the public relations game and focus on actually negotiating a fair contract Here
  • Email or call the mayor and demand that she make additional funds available for the settlement of a fair contract Here
  • Email or call your city council members and encourage them to do everything in their power to direct more money to NPS Here

Tickets to Bigelow’s Fall Play “Charlotte’s Web”

Tickets are now on sale for next week’s performances of Bigelow’s Fall Play, “Charlotte’s Web.” The show is about 100 minute with one 15 minute intermission. This performance is appropriate for children of all ages, and we do expect it to sell out! Get your tickets now!
