Bigelow Magazine Drive

The Bigelow Magazine Drive, one of the important fundraisers for our school supporting field trips, creative arts, classroom equipment, etc., will kick off on Friday, November 16, 2012. A package with all necessary information to participate will be coming home with your student that day.

For those who are getting renewal requests for current magazine subscriptions in the mail, please note the following:

Bigelow Middle School will not get any funds, when you use these renewal mailers. Only when renewing as follows will Bigelow get the 40 % of your subscription price paid:

1. Either online via www.gaschoolstore.com (new website of Great American Opportunities, which QSP is now part of), school/organization online ID 2637080, check the box “renewal”, (payment by credit card),

2. or through your student from the catalog with the paper order forms coming home on November 16, 2012, check the box “renewal” (cash, or checks made out to Bigelow PTO).

If you would like to convert a regular magazine subscription to a digital magazine subscription (there are 53 magazines available in a digital format), you will be ordering them as a new subscription in one of the two ways outlined above.

Thank you for your support!!

2. Staff the bake sale
3. Buy baked goods

Can’t bake? We can also sell store-bought individually wrapped snacks and Halloween candy, bottled water, bananas, and apples.

THANKS FOR MAKING THE SOUP STROLL SO GREAT!

We would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s soup stroll! It was a fabulous evening and an enormous success. The money raised will go towards our creative arts and sciences programs as well as technology. A big thank you to the hosts who generously volunteered their homes and who took great care and time to prepare special meals.  Thanks to all of you who participated – for your generous donations and for your terrific community spirit.  As much as the Soup Stroll is a fundraiser, it is a wonderful opportunity for families to connect, meet one another and form new friendships.

A special thank you to all of those who provided a dining experience…

Ernie and Michelle  Gonzalez
Megan Campbell Risen and Udi Meirav

Shoo Flu: Get the flu vaccine at school, not the flu!

Seasonal flu vaccination clinics will be held during the school day at the Newton Public Schools in October and November. Students in Kindergarten through grade 12 may receive vaccine.

The Bigelow Middle School clinic will be on Thursday October 25th. Each student to be vaccinated must have a parent/guardian complete two forms: a consent/screening form and an insurance/administration record. Forms are available in the school nurse’s office, or may be downloaded at www.newtonma.gov/flu. Forms are due to the School Nurse Tuesday October 23rd. Continue reading

Election Day Bake Sale – November 6th

We are looking for someone to organize and oversee the election day bake sale.  All money raised goes to support the PTO.   The chair person is responsible for putting a Google docs up and coordinating shifts. They also make sure everything is clearly labeled. Polls open at 7 and the bake sale is right outside the Bigelow gym.  People are in line at 6am so shifts start at 6am and end late afternoon (or till we run out of food). There are already some people are signed up to bake and work shifts.  We have a good helping community, so it should be easy to get additional volunteers.

You’re invited — 4th Annual Soup Stroll!

We hope you can join us for this fabulous night out.  It is a great community event and fundraiser!  You get to support our school and children while enjoying fine food and great company.

Here’s how it works:

On the night of Saturday, October 13th at 7:00pm everyone attending the event gets together for one big hors d’oeuvres party. There, you will receive your assignment as to where you will go for your delicious soup and smaller gathering. After dinner we reconvene as a large group for dessert and coffee at a surprise location.

The Appetizer Party is hosted by Becky and Bill Manley
35 Hyde Avenue

RSVP DEADLINE is Oct. 10th.

You can sign up on-line or by printing the invitation.  Just click below …

Changes to PTO Website- Calendars Now Available!

To keep you informed regarding school and PTO activites, we have made several enhancements to the Bigelow PTO website

  • There is now a list of upcoming events pulled from the PTO Calendar on the right-hand bar.  The PTO calendar includes all parent related events, activities and school closing.
  • There is also a link to the Bigelow Student Activities Calendar under Useful Links also on the right-hand bar.  This calendar provides information on all the clubs, activities, and sports events occuring before and after school.

Advertising Opportunity in the Bigelow Directory

Bigelow has a marketing opportunity for a limited time.  Up until October 5th, 2012, we will be taking advertisements for the publication of Bigelow’s Parent Teacher Directory. The directory, which includes approximately 630 students and faculty, is published each year. The directory lists the names and contact number for members of the Bigelow community. This is a unique opportunity to offer your services to your target market. Dollars raised go towards creative arts and sciences and technology for our school.

If you are interesting in placing an ad in the Bigelow Parent Teacher, please email Becky at bigelowbulldog@gmail.com. Prices range from $500-$100.

Bigelow Celebrates Walk-Bike-Bus to School Week and Collects Shoes for Kids in Need

In support of the environment and reducing traffic around our school, students are encouraged to walk, bike or take the bus to school (and home) as much as possible this coming week, October 1st through October 5th.  This is an effort happening across the city and the world.  In fact on Wednesday, millions of children from nearly 40 countries will be walking and biking to school in a show of support for keeping our communities safe for walking and biking.  Thank you to the children riding the bus as they are doing their part in reducing car traffic near schools.  Teachers will be surveying students this week to determine how many of our students walked/biked/bused to school.

A few safety reminders:  Continue reading
