For 6th Grade Parents – Volunteers needed to help with Bike Education Program

We are in need of several volunteers to help run the middle school bike education program we are piloting in April.  Can you help?

NPS Health and Wellness Coordinator Dana Bennet has compiled a curriculum tailored to middle schoolers aimed at increasing their bike safety awareness including new skills like safe route planning, making themselves more visible and ensuring their bikes are road ready. She will be piloting this in PE class for 6th graders at Bigelow during students’ regularly scheduled PE period. A successful run here will help get it rolling at all the middle schools next year.

Volunteers needed:

Monday April 11th  8:00 am  – 10:30 am
Wednesday April 13th 1:00 pm  – 2:30 pm

Please contact Alicia Bowman at alicia.bowman@comcast.net if you are available to help.

National Day of Silence

April 15, 2016 is the National Day of Silence, a student-led action sponsored by Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) in which thousands of students around the country will remain silent for all or part of the school day to call attention to the harassment and discrimination faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.  The Bigelow GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) has organized activities for this day.

Bigelow students can show their support and participate in the Day of Silence in two ways.

1) REMAIN SILENT FOR THE DAY –  Students making this choice are expected to participate non-verbally in all school-related activities, both in the classroom and the cafeteria. Students can choose to wear a Day of Silence button and carry a “speaking” card that explains their silence.

2) BE AN ALLY –  Allies will not remain silent themselves, but will respect the silence of others.  Students can choose to sign an ally poster and wear an ally button to show their support.
