Try out Archery – kid and adult classes

Beginner and Intermediate Archery:
Try out traditional recurve archery, as seen in the Olympics! Relax as you aim for your target and feel the thrill of success when your patience and concentration pays off. Learn the fundamentals and challenge yourself in archery games like knockout, battleship and more.

Classes led by certified USA Archery and National Field Archery Association (NFAA) instructors. All equipment provided.  If interested, please signup ASAP because at least 10 participants are needed to run this program. To enroll, please contact the Newton Recreation Department at 617- 796-1500 or email cames@newtonma.gov for more information. .

Five week course: Wednesdays, March 18th through April 15th
Cost: $135.00
Youth session for ages 10 – 15 years, 6:15 – 7:15 pm
Adult class for ages 16 and up,  7:30 – 8:30 pm

The West Suburban YMCA would like share some of their current programming and other events open to Newton residents.

Summer Camp Information Night
There’s nothing like summer camp at the Y. One session or the whole summer. Indoors and out. On their own or in a group. Archery to arts, canoeing to cannonballs, with the West Suburban YMCA your kids will have an amazing experience, all in a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment.

  • Camp Frank A. Day Ages 7-15 Overnight camp in East Brookfield, MA
  • Camp Pikati Ages 6-13 Sports and Enrichment Day Camp at the Y
  • Camp Polliwog Ages 3-6 Preschool / Early Education Day Camp at the Y

Comt to the Y for Camp Information Night to meet the staff, participate in fun camp activities and games and learn more about registering for summer camps. Registration for After School Programs at the Y for the 2015-16 School Year is Open

Creative Arts Programs at the Y
Want to learn an instrument or join a band?! The West Suburban YMCA Center for the Creative Arts (YCCA) offers contemporary lessons and classes on many different instruments such as guitar, bass, drums, piano, voice, as well as music production. Lifeguard Training Class being offered at the West Suburban YMCA
A Lifeguard Training Class will run on Friday evenings from 6:00 – 10:00 pm, March 13th through May 8th (no class on 4/3 and 4/24). Registration can be completed buy phone or by contacting Amanda Pierce at amandap@westsuburbanymca.org. Free Workshop for Girl Athletes, Parents, Coaches: March 12

Parents, coaches & teen girls can learn about sports safety, injury prevention, and training at GirlFest, a free workshop sponsored by Marathon Physical Therapy.

Register for Heartbreak Hill Road Race & Walk

Spring is just around the corner (yes, it’s true!) – and it’s time to start dusting off those running (or walking) shoes!

Registration is now open for the 23rd annual Heartbreak Hill Road Race and Family Walk, a perfect way to shake off some of that cabin fever! Not a runner? Everyone can walk the course at 11:30am.

Sunday, April 19
noon – 3:30pm
Newton City Hall

Every runner receives an official digital-clock time, a race medallion, goody bag and a free ticket to the pre-race pasta party at Newton City Hall on Saturday, April 18th.

The 1st, 2nd & 3rd place runners in each category win a trophy! There are free games and activities organized by Steve DeMasco’s Shaolin Studios of Wellesley and the Lasell College Special Events students. Register now at the Newton Community Pride website.  The first 500 registrations receive a free t-shirt.

Register before February 28th

Newton Girls Softball, a recreational league for Newton girls in grades K-7, welcomes players of all skill levels. The league is committed to providing an experience that fosters positive self-esteem, team spirit, and individual growth through personal achievement and as a team member.

The league is excited to be expanding to include Kindergarten girls this spring. The brand new Kindergarten T-Ball program begins May 2nd.

February 28th is the last date to register for softball with guaranteed placement and pair-me-with requests (after February 28th, players will be placed on wait list without “pair-me-with” rights). For more information and to register, please visit www.newtongirlssoftball.org.

Boxing Benefit

The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club of Newton in partnership with Nonantum Boxing Club present Fight Night 2015. The night will feature 7-10 bouts between local amateur fighters sanctioned by USA Boxing. Don’t miss this chance to see some of Newton’s finest take on fighters from other gyms across the state.

Fitness Program

Get Burly is a fitness program designed to promote athletes to be the best version of themselves through supporting their peers and through fitness. Their mission is to instill and inspire youth to develop a passion for fitness through group circuit training and team building games.

Introduce your child to “Fun Through Fitness”. Participants (Grades 6-9) will engage in group circuit training as well as a variety of team building activities and cooperative games. For additional information, please visit

Try outs for B2L AAU Spring Basketball

B2L AAU is holding try outs for Boys basketball on March 1st. With experienced coaches from top colleges in the Boston area, B2L provides an opportunity for boys and girls to develop skills, knowledge and love of the game in an environment composed of positive reinforcement that teaches respect, discipline, sportsmanship, commitment and hard work.
