Basketball clinic for boys and girls

Boston Athletic Training (BAT) is offering an 8 week basketball clinic for boys and girls ages 8-16. BAT has run 3 successful clinics in the past year and has been dedicated to training young athletes since 2012. The coaches of the program emphasize teaching the fundamentals of the sport, as well as the strategy of the game to ensure each athlete will improve. Another unique part of the program is the conditioning portion of the clinic. Each week the athletes will spend 30 minutes on improving either speed, endurance, power or core strength.

Camp Grossman Open House

Meet the camp director and staff at JCC Greater Boston to learn how Camp Grossman is the best place to be this summer. A vibrant Jewish day camp located on 75 acres in Dover’s pine-studded Hale Reservation, they offer campers ages 4½-15 summer days filled with aquatics, sports, arts and nature. With a wide variety of activities, there is something for every camper no matter how big or small. Bus transportation is available to and from a variety of locations throughout Greater Boston. Program Registration for Winter Session – Registration for Winter Programs at the West Suburban YMCA is now open to all members and non-members. The Winter Program Session starts the week of January 2nd. Some program highlights include:

Resolutions Fitness Challenge – New year, new you! Sign up for the Y’s Resolutions Fitness Challenge to jumpstart your health and fitness goals for 2019. Join a team led by one of the Y’s certified personal trainers, and compete against other teams to see whose team can lose the greatest percentage of weight and body fat during the eight week challenge.


School Vacation Week Programs – Do your kids need something to do while they are off from school for winter vacation? The West Suburban YMCA is offering full day and half day program options December 26th -28th. Winter Camp Extravaganza – Celebrate summer in the winter! Bring the whole family for this exciting event at the West Suburban YMCA. There will be three live shows from comedy magician Steven Craig, musical ventriloquist Kevin Driscoll, and Curious Creatures! In addition to the performances, there will be raffles, door prizes, auction items, face painting, balloon animals, Henna tattoos and more!

Y Empower – free program for 10 year old girls. Y Empower is a new free program geared toward 10 year old girls. It is intended to provide a small learning community for them to explore their health holistically and be prepared to manage the stress that adolescence often brings. Half of the time is spent in a classroom setting with expert speakers about topics such as nutrition, social media safety, and self care. The second half of the time is spent trying specific fitness activities such as yoga, Zumba, and swimming. The Body Project – free program for high school girls. The Y is proud to partner with MEDA (Multi-service Eating Disorder Association) to offer a six-week program that provides a forum for girls to confront unrealistic beauty ideals and engage them in the development of a healthy body image through verbal, written and behavioral exercises. Pickle Ball – The West Suburban YMCA hosts drop-in pickle ball on both Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-11:30 am in the gymnasium. Pickle ball is free for West Suburban YMCA members and $5.00 drop-in fee for non-members.

Newton Girls Lacrosse 2019 Season registration now open

Since 1999, NEWTON GIRLS LACROSSE (NGL) has been dedicated to providing Newton girls and their families a community based developmental lacrosse program.

NGL is the only Newton girls lacrosse program with opportunities for all Newton girls in grades 1-8 to play lacrosse. They encourage girls at all ages, regardless of experience, to join the program and learn lacrosse while meeting new friends, being active and competing.

The program delivers a fun, safe and inclusive youth sport environment that compliments the core values our families observe at home, at school, in the community and on the field.

TEAMS
Last year the program was made up of 200 families with 250 girls rostered. The program offered 11 travel teams and 2 select teams in the Founders Girls Lacrosse League.

Practices and Games
All grade levels practice at Weeks Field in Newton Center on Mondays and Wednesdays starting in late March and ending in June. In addition, the program also uses both outdoor and indoor turf when the spring weather creates challenges.

Games are played on Sundays for all grade levels and Friday nights for the 5/6 and 7/8 select teams.

2019 Newton Little League Spring Registration is now open

Registration for the 2019 Newton Little League Spring Season is now available on the league’s website: www.newtonllbaseball.org

Newton Little League serves players who reside within or attend private or public schools within the boundaries of Ward, Underwood, Lincoln-Eliot, Horace Mann, Peirce, Cabot, Burr, Franklin, Williams elementary schools, and provides programs for players ages 4 through 12.

Programs for younger players are based on school grade, and teams are put together based on elementary school and friend requests: T-Ball (Pre-K), Rookie (Kindergarten), Farm (grade 1) and Single A (grade 2). In programs for older players, teams are put together with more of a focus on competitive balance: AA (grades 3-4), AAA (grades 4-6) and Majors (ages 10-12).

There is also a Challenger division for students with special needs who wish to enjoy the game of baseball.

All players interested in playing in the 2019 AAA division must attend an evaluation session and complete registration prior to the evaluation date. The AAA evaluations will be held on January 19th. This event will also serve as the Majors Division makeup evaluation for players who were unable to attend tryouts in the fall.

Kids Yoga Series

Down Under School of Yoga’s winter Kids Yoga Series begins in January! Classes are organized by age to ensure that the content is fun, constructive and age-appropriate while also fostering a sense of community for students to support each other through learning- taking their yoga off the mat and into the world around them.

5th annual Newton Turkey Trot

Online registration for the 5th annual Newton Turkey Trot closes on November 12th! This event kicks off on November 17th (the Saturday before Thanksgiving) with a 1 mile kids’ fun run at 8:30 am followed by the 5K race at 9:00 am.  For information and to register, visit www.newtonturkeytrot.org

2nd Annual Turkey Bowl

The 2nd Annual Turkey Bowl will take place on November 17th! All teams are guaranteed at least 3 games of play. The cost for registration is only $40 per free agent, or $300 per team. Click here for the team registration page.

All players are placed into divisions by age groupings (6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, and 15U). Teams with free agents are also balanced according to age and year of experience. Each division has playoffs and a Turkey Bowl Champion with individual medals for each player from the winning team. All games are less than 1 hour. NFL Flag is the premier youth flag football league for both boys and girls. The program provides young players a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in non-contact action while learning lessons in teamwork. It’s designed to educate young people about football, while emphasizing participation and sportsmanship. Players learn skills and lessons that help them succeed both on and off the field.
