Newton Summer Stage Theatre Program for High Schoolers

Newton Community Education is thrilled to announce that they are bringing back Newton Summer Stage, the popular summer theatre program for high schoolers (rising 9-12th graders). Hone your acting skills, train your singing voice, and learn exciting choreography as you rehearse the much-beloved musical Bye Bye Birdie. An experienced team will guide you through five weeks of rehearsals, culminating in two fully-produced performances.

In addition to working on the fundamentals of musical theatre, you’ll also explore other aspects of a theatrical production including design, construction, publicity, and more. No previous experience necessary! Newton Summer Stage will be led by Newton North teachers Dan Fabrizio, Director; Chris Roppola, Music Director; and Brad Jensen, Choreographer. Summer Writing and Adventure Day Camp in Boston

Do you know a rising 5th through 10th grade student looking for an adventure worth writing about? At Summer Ink, campers engage in exciting arts and sports activities, take field trips throughout Boston – and write about their experiences. Whether your student relishes writing or struggles to find the right words, Summer Ink works.

Trained classroom teachers (4:1 ratio) give daily, targeted feedback as campers hone skills and find their unique voice. Two-week sessions at Simmons College in July. Scholarships are available to qualified families. Visit www.summerink.org for details and to register.

Music That Matters Summer Camp

Plugged In’s Music That Matters Summer Day Camp is for kids ages 11-18 and includes band class, songwriting, recording a song for a CD, music video, workshops, offsite events, and performance opportunities. Each session ends with a benefit concert that raises money for a charitable organization chosen by the students themselves. Plugged In provides a nurturing and supportive community to which young musicians feel a sense of belonging, an opportunity to express and be acknowledged for their musical interests and a chance to use their music to help others around the world.

Founded in 2002, Plugged In now has over 160 students from all over Massachusetts. Some of our students experience emotional and learning difficulties, such as ADD, depression, and low-self-esteem and/or have special needs such as autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. Using well loved children’s stories to teach acting basics and beginning theatre.

Happily Ever After…? (2nd- 5th Grade), 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, $475.00

With a concentration on fairytales and folklore, students will work creatively to compose their own stories complete with puppets, props and scenery.

Playwriting (4th-8th Grade), 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, $475.00
July 18th – 22nd
Students will not only learn the basic structures and dramatic elements of creating original one-act plays, but also the different aspects and roles of a production team.

“All the World’s a Stage!” (6th-12th Grade) 9: am – 3:00 pm, $475.00

Focusing on specific Shakespearean scenes, students will learn to interpret, deliver and perform selections along with movement and character development.

“Improvarama!” (2nd-8th Grade) 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, $475.00

Students will learn the essentials of improvisation, create characters and scenes through games and exercise designed to build confidence, self-reliance and develop teamwork.

This delightful adaption of the Disney film brings Lewis Carroll’s famous inquisitive heroine to life. Join Alice as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game!

Annie (2nd-12th Grade), July 11th – July 30th
Performances: July 29th & 30th
Tuition for 3 Weeks: $1,650 ($550 Per Week)
Join the troupe for this tony winning show based on the popular comic strip by Harold Gray. Follow little orphan Annie as she charms everyone’s hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. She is determined to find her parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan. With the help of the other girls in the Orphanage, Annie escapes to the wondrous world of NYC. In adventure after fun-filled adventure she finds a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

Help fund student scholarships, come to the GELF Dinner

Please extend your support for the Jennifer Price Global Education Leadership Fund (GELF)’s annual benefit dinner. For those of you who don’t know about the GELF, it’s a fantastic scholarship program that supports Newton students in taking advantage of international opportunities. Most of these students come from low-income families and wouldn’t otherwise be able to take advantage of the many extraordinary global learning programs offered through Newton North and South.

Students who return from abroad speak often about the pivotal role these experiences have played in their personal and academic lives. Please help GELF continue to convince our students that no one should tune out when international learning opportunities are announced!

On Saturday, April 2nd, GELF will hold its annual dinner/fundraiser from 6:30 – 10:30 pm at Newton North High School. The evening is a not-to-be-missed community event, featuring an amazing 5-course gourmet meal (cooked from scratch on-site!!), paired fine beers & wines (featuring Sam Adams beer pairings, a major hit last year!), dancing (with a great live band featuring our own Katani Sumner), 150 like-minded community members, table service by Newton administrators, and a live auction.

Charter Commission Public Hearing on School Committee and Executive Branch

Please join the Newton Charter Commission for a Public Hearing. Newton residents are encouraged to attend this hearing to provide input to members of the commission regarding the executive branch and the School Committee provisions of the Newton Charter. The hearing is expected to broadcast on NewTV.
