Projects for affordable housing, historic resources, open space, or recreation land that would like to be considered for a grant in the fall of 2015 must contact Newton Community Preservation Committee staff by February 1st, 2015, to request the required in-person orientation meeting.

The LigerBots, Newton’s award-winning, competitive, high school FIRST® robotics team, will be having a fundraiser during the entire month of January at Whole Foods on Walnut Street at Four Corners. Team members will be present during after-school hours to talk about the team. The goal is to raise $1000 during the month of January. Your donation will help the team buy parts to build its 2015 robot and will help defray the high costs of entering and traveling to competitions. Please support the LigerBots by purchasing a donation coupon at the register to help them reach their goal for this fundraiser.

The Second Annual Citywide Food Drive is well underway and, this year, we are expanding our efforts to help fight food insecurity in the City of Lawrence as well as Newton. Through December 30th, you can donate the following items at more than 40 drop-off locations throughout Newton: canned fruit and vegetables, jarred pasta sauce, peanut butter, jelly/jam, ground coffee, tea, cake and pie crust mixes, baby food, juice boxes and bottles, vegetable oil, bar soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, and children and adult diapers. At each location, there will be two boxes – one for Newton and one for Lawrence.
Last year, the food drive collected more than 200 boxes of donated food and needed items for Newton’s food pantries, which serve more than 1,200 residents a month. This year, we are hoping to surpass that number and support families in need – here in Newton as well as in Lawrence. Understanding Our Differences is pleased to announce that they have been awarded an official B.A.A. invitational entry application to the 2015 Boston Marathon on April 20, 2015.

The Safe Routes to School Task Force encourages you and your children to walk or bike to school this fall and winter. Walking to school reduces traffic congestion around schools, boosts a sense of community, and gives your child good pedestrian and biking skills they will use throughout life.
“Newton MA 311″ is the City of Newton’s app for your mobile phone and allows you to report concerns immediately, pinpoint the exact location, and include a photo. You can report anonymously or with contact information so you can track the progress of the report. In addition to sidewalk repairs, sign and traffic signal problems, and brush covering the sidewalk, there are 14 categories for reporting snow concerns, including sidewalks that are not cleared and corners that are blocked. You can also report concerns on their website or call the city at 617-796-1000. We encourage you to report a problem even if someone else already has, as the volume of reports draws the city’s attention to the problem.
Please contact pedestrian@newtonma.gov with any questions. Additionally, please shovel your sidewalk and encourage your neighbors to shovel theirs so children can walk safely to school through the winter.

This year NSF is making a difference for Newton students through its Investing In Innovation fundraising campaign. Funds raised through the campaign are helping to ensure that NPS maintains and continues to provide pioneering programs for students and offers faculty and staff first-rate professional learning opportunities. Without these funds, NPS would be unable to expand many offerings district-wide or include students at all grade levels.
Since the campaign’s 2013 launch, Newton Schools Foundation has given the Newton Public Schools $170,000 to fund creative, dynamic, effective and up-to-date learning experiences for Newton’s diverse student population, reaching all levels of the school system – elementary, middle and high school – in areas that include:
* STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
* Sustainability
* Literacy and History
* Closing the Achievement Gap
