Executive Function Skills in Children and Adolescents

Teach children to manage their time, space and materials and keep their emotions in check!

This presentation will cover powerful strategies to help your child develop independent executive function; teach students to internally sense the sweep of time, self-monitor in order to sustain concentration, manage pace, and complete tasks in allocated time frames; improve students’ motivation and task initiation, help them to plan homework and long-term projects/papers, and coach students to think in an organized way; and encourage self-initiative to manage homework and personal belongings.

Ms. Kristen Jacobsen, MS CCC-SLP is a trained speech-language pathologist who is Co-Director at the Cognitive Connections Executive Function Practice. Advocating for children in the special education system can be frustrating and overwhelming for parents. Over the past decade, Attorney Jeffrey Sankey has worked with hundreds of parents to help them obtain special education services for their children. In his experience, he has found that the parents who are best able to navigate the intricacies of the special education process share a number of common traits, which we will explore during this session.

Boomerang Bags

Boomerang Bags is part of a global effort (860 participating communities) to reduce waste and incorporate re-usable shopping bags into daily living.

The Newton Boomerang Bag community was started this fall by Lisa Monahan (Newton resident/business owner), and Olivia Scheff (NSHS student). BB bags began in Australia when two women who were interested in doing something to help the environment created a model that could be used all over the world. Volunteers from all walks of life get together to make re-useable ‘boomerang bags’ using recycled materials, as a means to provide a sustainable alternative to plastic bags. Here is a link to the BB website for more info http://boomerangbags.org.
