Newton Special Education Programs for Middle and High School Students – Monday, October 3 at 7:30 PM

Come hear about special education services and programs in Newton’s Middle and High Schools for the 2011-2012 school year.  Learn about the reorganization of the special education programs at Newton South High School and Day Middle School.

Meet Judy Levin-Charns, Ed.D, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services; Paula Nargi Black, the new Assistant Director for Student Services for Middle and High Schools; Walter Lyons, Chair Special Education Dept. Newton North HS; Kathleen Farnsworth, the new Chair of Special Education Dept. Newton South HS; and Susan Bornstein (Day), Courtney Rau (Bigelow), Jennifer Truslow (Brown) and Shari Engelbourg (Oak Hill) the Assistants to the Principals at the Middle Schools.

The presentation will be held in Room 210 at 100 Walnut Street.  Light refreshments and networking begin at 7:15 PM.  The presentation will begin at 7:30 and end at 9:00 PM.

Newton Community Farm Benefit Dinner at Lumiere – October 18, 2011

Food, Fun, and Fascinating People at Lumiere all in support of Newton Community Farm!

Be a part of this lively annual event on Tuesday evening, October 18, 2011. For $150 per person (tax deductible portion is $65), join us at 7:00 PM in West Newton at Chef Mike Leviton’s Lumière restaurant (1293 Washington Street, Newton); considered to be among the finest restaurants in the Boston area. The fine dining will include a creative, four-course dinner, wine pairings with each course, and vegetarian options. Besides his culinary reputation, Chef Leviton is known as a leader in promoting and serving local, sustainable and humanely raised food, including his meat and fish choices. Proceeds from the event will support NCF’s education and outreach programs, including donations to the Newton Food Pantry. Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program looking for Child Advocates

The Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program in Newton is looking for committed and dedicated child advocates to present its personal safety curriculum in local elementary schools.

Join up with current and experienced volunteer Prevention Specialists to teach children to recognize and respond to verbal, physical and sexual assault and abuse. Potential volunteers are community members who believe that children have the right to information, skills and the support of adults. We offer a flexible schedule to volunteers who enjoy teamwork and can make a yearlong commitment of three or four mornings a month.

To make it easier for people with busy schedules to train we have decided to offer 4 short morning sessions, 9 am to noon on W and F in Oct. The dates are 12, 14, 19 and 21. We are reserving the option to extend each session by an hour each day depending on the demographics of the trainees.

Part 1 of the training will prepare trainees to present one of the three facilitations and participate in all of the role plays. Part 2, on Review Time will be scheduled for late November, early December, based on the trainees’ availability.
