Free Sunday Concert

Under the dynamic leadership of writer, composer, singer Ras Michael I, Jah Spirit blends an African-Reggae beat with elements of calypso jazz, blues and rock. Ras Michael, a native of Trinidad, captivates his audiences with spellbinding lyrics and a stage presence that has been described as charismatic, highly energetic and spirited. Bring your family, a picnic, a chair/blanket to sit on, and your dancin’ shoes to the first of four terrific free summer concerts on Sunday evenings in July! Free Summer Concert for Kids

Launching her music career as a member of the New York-based girl group “The Chiclettes,” Stacey Peasley developed a deep love and appreciation for the innocent, yet catchy songs of the girl-group era. A teacher for ten years and a professional singer for twenty-five, Peasley combines her love of children and music into a lively act that engages kids and creates memorable and fun sing-along songs. Teen Study Nights @ the Library, June 15th, 19th, 20th, and 21st:
The Library will remain open late (until 11:00 pm) during finals this year. Don’t stress! Stop by the auditorium for some fun study breaks, like coloring, hula hoops, and snacks. Book a study room online! http://newtonfreelibrary.libcal.com/booking/study. There will be extra supplies on hand, like paper, hi-lighters, easels and more and every night they’ll offer food, like pizza and ice cream.

Ice Cream Party: Teen Summer Reading Kick-Off:
June 20th, 7:00 pm, Druker Auditorium: Stop by the Library to celebrate the beginning of summer with ice cream provided by J.P. Licks and Minute-to-Win-It games. While you’re here pick up information on the Teen Summer Reading program. Get involved and explore the theme, “Build a Better World” with programs throughout the summer. Log your reading throughout the summer and help reach the teen goal of 400,000 minutes. If we reach our goal we’ll get a community prize (i.e. Nintendo Switch, bean bag chairs, etc.) that you can vote on for the new teen space. Grades 6-12 (this event is for teens only).

July 4th Celebration in Newton

Kids’ Morning
July 4th, 10:00 am – 12 Noon, Newton Centre Playground at Tyler Terrace.
Free event for children ages 3 – 12 years. Children and families are invited to join in the Grande Pet Parade, Decorated Doll Carriage Promenade, Teddy Bear Parade and Foot Races. Free ice cream, candy and drinks complete the morning celebration – courtesy of Cabot’s Ice Cream. Kids Morning is cancelled in the event of rain.

Afternoon/Evening Events
July 4th, 12 Noon – 10:00 pm – Albemarle Field/Halloran Sports Complex
The fun continues with kiddie amusement rides, face painting, craft vendor booths and food trucks. The free entertainment at the Gazebo is provided by Constantine the Magician, the YCCA Band and Caribbean music by D’Allegro Band from DESFOB, Inc. Then, the fun moves over to the main stage with the fabulous Bo & Bill Winiker Band for more music and dancing from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Bring lawn chairs, try out the delicious food from the many food trucks and pick up your light-up novelties. At 9:00 pm, don’t miss the grand finale…a fantastic fireworks display! Dinner on the Farm 2017 with Guest Chefs from Farmstead Table!

Join the annual Dinner on the Farm, a beautiful evening of fantastic food, breathtaking views of the Newton Community Farm’s fields, and the company of others who share your love of your local community farm.

And new this year…. welcome Chad and Sharon Burns of Farmstead Table, who will be preparing the meal. They are designing a special menu, highlighting fresh produce from the farm.

The registration deadline is July 5th. $75.00 for Friends of the Farm, and $85.00 for non-Friends of the Farm. Your ticket covers the cost of the dinner, and an additional contribution to NCF education programs. Please visit the website for information and registration.

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson

Join thousands and kids and families at aquatic facilities around the globe for The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson. We’re making a splash to spread the word that Swimming Lessons Save Lives!

The West Suburban YMCA is providing free swim lessons to children of all ages on June 22nd at the following times:
9:15 – 10:00 am
11:15 – 12:00 pm
12:00 – 12:45 pm
3:15 – 4:00 pm

Everyone is welcome. Please call the Y’s Welcome Center at 617-244-6050 to pre-register for one of the swim lessons.

Elementary Meet and Greet with the Newton Mustangs Football and Cheer Organization

Come to a fun evening of football and cheer drills! Have any questions about the league? NMYFC Board Members will be there to answer any of your questions. Stop by the sign-up station for any registration concerns.

Free Talk: How to Kick Start your College Essay

Summer is a great time for rising high school seniors to begin work on their college essay. Jane Hirschhorn, an expert writing coach with more than 20 years of experience, will offer tips for students to get started on this critical part of the college application.
