Family Film Festival Janurary 12th-15th

Belmont World Film is holding its 15th Annual Family Festival. Although some films are for people of any age, the majority of films are geared toward children age 3-12. For complete schedules, locations, and other information, please see: Brochure and Flyer

Some highlights include:

  • WBUR is bringing a live version of Circle Round, their storytelling podcast for kids ages 4 to 10, featuring carefully-selected folktales from around the world on Sunday at 10:30 am.
  • Four short films about child refugees and immigrants, a benefit for the Refugee and Immigrant Assistance Center (RIAC) on Monday at 3:45 pm.
  • Bridges Together, an organization devoted to training others to implement successful and meaningful inter-generational programs, will distribute a guide to stimulate discussion between grandparents, parents, and children at “Oskar’s America” on Monday at 2:00 pm.
  • The Reelabilities Film Festival, dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories and artistic expressions of people with different disabilities, is co-presenting “Hero Steps,” about a 10 year-old boy with a prosthetic leg who wishes to play in a school soccer tournament as he did before he lost his leg, on Monday at 12:00 noon.

Celebrate the New Year at the Third Annual First Day at the Mosesian Center for the Arts! Free family fun featuring: Art & Theatre Activities, Fortunes, a Ball Drop at Noon, a Live Performance from Karen K & the Jitterbugs at 12:15 pm, New Year’s Photo Booth, Dance Party & more!

FORJ – Families Organizing for Racial Justice

Are you concerned about what the Newton Public Schools are doing to respond to the rising tide of overt racism in our country? Join the next meeting of *FORJ – Families Organizing for Racial Justice, a project sponsored by NPS.

Superintendent Fleishman, Newton METCO Director, Maricel Sheets, and teacher Jen Tomaneng will be sharing and answering questions about the “Courageous Conversations” program being rolled out over a 5-year period in our schools.

The goal is to have an active team of interested parents at each school who meet on their own and participate in the monthly all-school FORJ meetings, which offer opportunities for further education, team planning time and networking. Parents are welcome to join at any time.

Newton Community Preservation Committee meeting date moved

The Newton Community Preservation Committee’s next meeting has been moved from December 14th to December 19th at 7:00 pm in the City Hall Cafeteria, Basement. The CPC will hear the Newton Housing Authority’s request to submit an updated $2.5 million proposal for their Jackson Road/Haywood House (Newton Corner) new senior housing project. A new, future date will be announced for the public hearing on proposed revisions to the program’s funding guidelines, previously scheduled for the December meeting.

Summer Camp Open House

The Chestnut Hill School Summer Day Camp is accredited with The American Camping Association, and provides enriching art, swimming, sport, drama, science and music experiences for children ages 3-14; trip options available for older campers.
Registration for 2018 (June 25th – August 17th) is now open.

Come to the Chestnut Hill School Summer Camp Open House on December 16th, 12:00 –  to 2:00 pm for food, face painting, activities, tours and more…Can’t make the Open House? Contact mnickerson@tchs.org or 617-264-1346 for an individual tour.

Upcoming Events for Teens at the Newton Free Library

Teen Crafterhours, December 4th, 7:00 pm, second floor Teen Area: Meet once a month a Monday night to make crafts and eat snacks. This week, make mittens out of felted wool and eat snacks! Grades 7-12.

Anime/Manga Club, December 6th, 4:00 pm, Computer Center: Come meet on the first Wednesday of every month and hang out with lovers of all things anime! Activities will range from anime screenings, to discussion of our favorite series, manga share and swap, anime-themed crafts, cosplay workshops, art trades and more!  Yummy Japanese snacks will be served. Grades 6-12.

Typewriter Poetry,  December 11, 7:00 pm, second floor Teen Area: Get creative with the monthly Typewriter Poetry group. Get together to use old-school typewriters and write poems for library patrons on the spot! Grades 7-12.
