Boston Athletic Training Open House

The upcoming open house will include free group training, prize giveaways and information about summer programming. BAT offers training for all athletes in both Speed + Agility and Strength & Conditioning. They also offer high quality skills training for both football and basketball players!

Vanessa Trien and the Jumping Monkeys Summer Kickoff Concert at City Hall!

All are invited to the War Memorial at City Hall as we blast into summer with Newton Free Library’s annual kickoff. Learn about the wonderful programs and reading opportunities revolving around the theme of space!

Dinner on the Farm July 22nd

Join the annual Dinner on the Farm,  an evening of great food with friends of the Farm. Enjoy one-of-a kind outdoor dining experience and connect with other community farm supporters.

As the sun sets on the 2.5-acre farm, you will be treated to a seasonal, produce-forward menu prepared by Gourmet Catering. Live old-time string music will be provided by local favorites, the Dixie Butterhounds.

Paddles and Picnics

The Crystal Lake Conservancy and the Newton Parks and Recreation Department invite you to come to a Sunday afternoon of activities on Crystal Lake.

Participants may sign up for half hour slots between 1:00 – 4:30 pm to enjoy the pleasures of canoeing/kayaking/paddle boarding. A lifeguard will be on duty and all participants will be required to wear life jackets and sign a waiver. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult while on the water.

A $15 donation per canoe/kayak/paddleboard supports the Crystal Lake Conservancy’s efforts to keep Crystal Lake healthy. To learn more, visit www.CrystalLakeConservancy.org or call Janice Bourque at 617-967-0797.

The Highlands After-School Program

Space is limited! Final call! The Highlands After-School Program is different than other programs because it’s geared to meet the needs and likes of middle school kids. Home at Brigham House in Newton Highlands, with regular access to the Hyde Community Gym and other wonderful resources. Transportation is arranged from the middle schools.

The program is open from school dismissal time until 6:00 pm and offers special programs on early release days. Activities include sports, arts, crafts, cooking, science, homework, and field trips etc. It’s a place to go and hang with friends, enjoy activities, and get a head start on homework.

The Natural Wonders of Cold Spring Park

Local naturalist and founder of The Caterpillar Lab Sam Jaffe will present “The Natural Wonders of Cold Spring Park”. This event is open to the public and co-sponsored by the Zervas PTO and the newly formed Friends of Cold Spring Park. Anyone is welcome and refreshments will be served.

Learn about:
• The park’s many diverse habitats and inhabitants;
• How Zervas classes are utilizing the park;
• Threats to the park’s ecosystem, and how to help preserve it;
• Plans to rehabilitate the trails and progress to date.

June 3rd,  7:30 pm in the Zervas cafetorium (Henry Finch of the Newton Conservators will lead an optional tour of Cold Spring Park at 6:30 pm. Meet for the walk at the Zervas main entrance.

Newton Creates- Community Art Project

Come to the Newton Free Library for a community art project to help raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. All ages are welcome! Place your piece in the mosaic, enjoy music and food, enter to win free raffle prizes, and help support our community of caring. Artist Emily Bhargava will lend her creative talents to help create a mosaic to be hung outside the Health and Human Services Department at Newton City Hall. Come be a part of our community of caring.

Scott Magoon Author Appearance

Scott Magoon, celebrated author and illustrator, gives children and families insight into his creative process including his latest publication Linus The Little Yellow Pencil. He is also the illustrator of many other books for children including Rescue & Jessica: A Life-Changing Friendship, the winner of the Schneider Family Book Award. Cabot Carr-nival

The Cabot Carr-nival Committee would like to invite all school families to this fun, annual event.  There will be lots of fun games, inflatables, prizes, a pizza truck, ice cream and much more.

Also this year, the Cabot Carr-nival is piloting a new initiative to make this great community event more accessible and inclusive to all families. To accomplish this goal, we are introducing the following:

1. Noise cancelling headphones available for checkout
2. Craft/sensory table for all kids that need a little down time
3. Break away room to go to if kids get too overwhelmed
4. Bubble machine (thanks to the NECP PTO)

CPC Discussion of Riverside Greenway

The Community Preservation Committee’s agenda includes discussing a pre-proposal from the Riverside Greenway Working group for funding to design a trail along the Charles River between Riverside and Auburndale.
