Doing Good by Shredding (Documents)

The Memorial-Spaulding PTO is hosting a fundraising “shred” on Saturday, October 27 from 10 am to 1 pm in the school parking lot (250 Brookline St.). PROSHRED – the most experienced document destruction company in the US – will have a shredder truck on site to receive and destroy your material.

Bring stapled and unstapled papers, files, check books, CDs, financial and other statements, electronic media, x-ray files, and more.

You can even watch via monitor as your documents get destroyed in real time, and 100% of the shredded materials will be recycled and made into other paper products.

The cost is $10 per box and all proceeds will benefit the PTO and school.

Celebrate Waban Library Center’s 3rd Birthday – Food, Music & Dancing, Oct. 20

Celebrate Waban Library Center’s Third Birthday with an evening of music and dancing at 1608 Beacon Street, Newton on Saturday, October 20 at 8PM. Join us for cocktails, buffet and dancing. NNHS Theatre Ink presents “Rumors” Nov. 1-3

“Rumors,” by Neil Simon, depicts one uproarious night in the lives of four wealthy couples where everything that can go wrong, does. With their hostess missing and their host mysteriously injured, the party guests must do their best to avoid any rumors spreading that could jeopardize their snooty status. Full of sharp wit and hilarious physical comedy, “Rumors” pokes fun at today’s upper crust with a nod towards the classic farce. Directed by Mr. Dan Fabrizio.

“Get Out of My Life! But First Will You Drive Me…to the Mall?”

Author and psychologist Anthony Wolf will act as a “translator“ for parents and teenagers who at times seem to be speaking completely different languages.

Dr. Wolf, who is the author of the popular parenting book, “Get Out of My Life! But first will you drive me and Cheryl to the Mall?” will help us consider how to most harmoniously work with typical teen behaviors in ways that strengthen relationships.

Parent Advisory Council for Special Education offerings

The Newton Parent Advisory Council for Special Education is offering several programs in October. Everyone is welcome and parents of students receiving special education services are particularly encouraged to attend.

Trade & Recycle Day at Rumford Ave. Recycling Ctr.

“Swap ’til you Drop” at Newton’s Trade & Recycle Day at the Rumford Av.e Resource Recycling Center, 145 Rumford Ave. in Auburndale.

Date: Saturday Oct. 13
Times: Drop off (Newton residents only) 8am-1:00pm; All are welcome to browse from 8am-2pm.

Usable household items, sporting goods, electronics (not trash) and more can be given away by Newton residents for use by others- and you are also welcome to take other’s stuff!

Introduction to Bridge class for adults

Think bridge is your grandmother’s card game? Think again! Bridge is thrilling, fast paced and fun.

The Waban Library Center is offering a series of 8 adult beginner bridge lessons that will be taught by certified bridge teacher, Silver Life Master (and Wabanite) Jori Ceder Grossack. Jori has been teaching bridge since 2003 and loves when her students become inspired by this amazing game.

Two eight-class series are offered:
Wednesday afternoons, 1:45pm-3:45pm, beginning Oct. 17
Thursday evenings, 6:15pm-8:15pm, beginning Oct. 18

Cost: $240
Class meets at the Waban Library Center, 1601 Beacon Street.

There is no need to have any knowledge of the game or similar trick-taking games (like Whist) and no need to bring a partner.

Dog Training & Off-Leash Etiquette Class

The Newton Parks & Recreation Dept. is offering free, one-hour sessions for dog owners (and dogs) on basic “etiquette” for off-leash parks.

Training topics will include:
How to enter the off-leash area
Dog-Dog interactions: When to worry/ when to act
Dog-People interactions: Remember – not everyone loves your dog

Artist Talk and Gallery Walk-through, Saturday, Oct. 6

The New Art Center invites you to join artist/ curator Elizabeth Thach (Brighton, MA) and artist Marisa Tesauro (New York, NY) for an artist talk and curatorial walk-through of the exhibition “Out of the Ruins: Reimagining the Romantic Tradition.”

Community Preservation Committee public mtg. Oct 11

Newton’s Community Preservation Committee holds its next meeting on Wednesday, October 11, at 7 pm in City Hall (Room 202). The public is invited.

Possible funding votes on two proposals:
– Angino Farm Barn Interior, supplemental funding request
– public hearing on a new proposal for affordable housing
on Eddy Street ( Newtonville/West Newton)

At this meeting the CPC will also continue its working session
the draft new funding guidelines.
