Bold & Beautiful Fashion Show to support Boys & Girls Club, May 22

The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club of Newton’s 16th Annual Fashion Show, BOLD and Beautiful, will be on Wednesday, May 22, at Karoun Restaurant in Newton.

Featuring fashions and accessories from some of Newton’s most original shops including: Brussels Sprouts, Folklorica, Stash and CERI|COMO, this stylish affair will focus on individual style, with a particular eye toward wear-ability for women of many different shapes, sizes, ages and tastes. This year, we are asking guests to, “Find yourself on the runway,” – whether by seeing a new look or possibly modeling one! Guests will also enjoy the colorful décor and sizzling Middle Eastern cuisine at Karoun. Once again, there will be an array of must-have baskets for raffle, an exciting BLING prize, and all that swag!

Tickets are $75 each and include dinner and table seating. Table sizes will vary, and can be reserved by contacting the Boys & Girls Club events coordinator at: (617) 630-2066 or by email.

Save the Date: NCF Seedling Sale: May 11-12

The Newton Community Farm (303 Nahanton Street) will hold its annual seedling sale on Saturday May 11 & Sunday May 12 from 12 3 pm, rain or shine! There will be 20,000 plants for sale.

Start your garden with hearty seedlings from Newton Community Farm! Choose from a wide array of vegetable and herb varieties, the same ones the Newton Community Farm has used and tested in its fields. NCF starts with the best seeds and plants them in an organically-certified, compost-based potting soil from Vermont Compost Company. All seedlings are hardened off and most are ready for planting upon pick-up. Talk to expert gardeners who will answer your questions.

Cost: $5 for four or six pack of plants. Cash or checks only. Bring a box or bag to carry your plants.
Friend of Farm Pre-Order: Friends of the Farm (by April 27) can pre-order plants using the NCF Seedling Sale Order Form 2013. Orders and payment must be postmarked by April 27th and will be filled in the order received. Pick-up your order on May 9 from 10 am to 7 pm. The minimum order is $20.

Book signing: Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo’s Mission to Pluto (4/13)

Dr. Oneeka Williams, author, will sign her book, Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo’s Mission to Pluto, at New England Mobile Book Fair, 82 Needham St, on Saturday, April 13, from 1:00 – 3:00pm.

Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo is a 9 year-old girl super surgeon, with special powers, who is committed to addressing problems in the Universe by using surgical techniques. She is assisted by her cast of surgical instruments, an irritable Koala bear, a Gullible Globe and is transported by a very capable Flying Ambulance. She loves science, has a very close knit and loving family and lives on the Island of Positivity. She believes that ‘Not even the Sky is the Limit” and so when Gordon the Gullible Globe sounds the alarm that Pluto is very sad because he has been downgraded from a planet to a dwarf planet, Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo is positive that she can do something about that. She jets off to Pluto with her team, operates on Pluto and restores his ability to become a planet again. Will he?

Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo’s Mission to Pluto introduces the concepts of the differences between planets and dwarf planet and explains why Pluto lost its status. It explains the significance of Pluto’s elliptical orbit and offers some understanding of gravitational forces. This is done in a playful and engaging way that will stimulate young minds. Newton Family Singers spring concert, May 5

Get ready to dive into the warmer weather with the Newton Family Singers as they perform their spring concert, “The Tide is High, Songs Reflecting on the Water.”

Go with the flow and join us for a program of tender, poignant and rocking water-inspired songs by an eclectic mix of artists including the Beatles, Lyle Lovett, Blondie, the Grateful Dead and the Indigo Girls.

Newton Community Preservation Comm meets April 11

The Newton Community Preservation Committee’s meeting on Thursday, April 11th will include discussion of a pre-proposal for the restoration and rehabilitation of the Nathaniel Allen House (35 Webster Street, West Newton), as well as committee business.

Community Concert: Meet the Orchestra, April 7

Bring your family and meet the orchestra through music, hilarity, and hi-jinx! The New Philharmonia Orchestra and the Newton All-City Orchestra present an imaginative and fun afternoon of music. Featuring music by Bach and Schubert plus a hysterical performance of “The Composer is Dead” with text by Lemony Snicket and narrated by local actor Jake Berger.

Students with Disabilities Transitioning from School to Adulthood

The Newton Parent Advisory Council for Special Education presents “What every transitioning student with disabilities needs to know,” a panel of experts in Adult Services for parents of students finishing high school.

Panel members will cover DDS services, residential services for those who are not eligible for state services, SSI/SSDI, and Massachusetts Rehab services for the transitioning student or adult.

Piano concert & celebration, April 6

On Saturday, April 6 at 7:30pm, Suzuki School of Newton (SSN) faculty and advanced students will perform at the Scandinavian Living Center, 206 Waltham Street in Newton.

Distinguished SSN alumna Anna Larsen, age 13, will be one of the performers. The concert, which will showcase a Steinway B concert grand piano, is free and open to the public. The program ranges in styles from Bach and Beethoven to tango and ragtime and is sure to please piano lovers of all ages.
