Spring & Summer programs at Newton Community Farm

Newton Community Farm has announced its 2013 spring and summer education programs for youth and families.

  • Offerings include vacation week programs and other classes during the spring.
  • Summer programs for children (pre-school through grade 9) include popular offerings such as Farm Sprouts, Little Diggers, Farmer in Training, and Socially Aware Young (SAY) Farmers.
  • High school students interested

    in farming and working outdoors should consider serving as a volunteer intern with the Farm Manager.

  • Adults and older teens can learn about gardening, cooking, or raising chickens!

Feb. vacation program at Watertown Children’s Theatre

Watertown Children’s Theatre has a few openings remaining for a NEW half-day vacation program for middle schoolers.  Students will explore theatre and performance styles from Shakespearean Stage Combat to Commedia Clown Fighting!

 

Tuesday to Friday,

Feb. 19-22
1:00 – 4:00pm
Location: Arsenal Center for the Arts

Practicing conventions of theatre and performance through each style and learning how actors keep each other safe, students will ‘fight for applause’ in a final perfomance for family and friends.

February Vacation programs at Newton Free Library

Comics & Cartooning Workshop, Tuesday, February 19, 3:30 pm
Born out of comic strips in the 1930s, comic books became increasingly popular with GI’s during WWII and have grown and developed in the 80+ years since they first appeared. Teens ages 13-17, come to a workshop on Tuesday, February 19 at 3:30 pm at the Newton Free Library to learn about the history of comics and cartooning, and participate in a how-to workshop/demonstration on techniques and tricks for storytelling. The program will be held in Druker Auditorium.

Teen Crafternoons, Wednesdays, February 20, 3:30 pm
Get creative on Wednesday,

February 20 at 3:30 pm in the second floor Teen Area of the Newton Free Library where we will be hanging out, working on crafts. This week we’ll be making candy sushi! Open to grades 6-12.

“Moonrise Kingdom” Movie Screening, Saturday, February 23, 2:00 pm
Set on an island off the coast of New England in 1965, “Moonrise Kingdom” tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact and run away together into the wilderness. The program is open to ages 13 and up and will be held at the Newton Free Library on Saturday, February 23 at 2:00 pm in Druker Auditorium. The movie is rated PG-13 and runs for 94 minutes.

New Art Center Vacation Art Program for kids & teens

The New Art Center’s vacation program offers students the opportunity to try a variety of art projects in a fun, safe, and supportive environment. These popular programs are a great way for your child to have fun and stay engaged during the school vacation.

Your child will enjoy four art classes each day including drawing, painting, ceramics and theater, as well as a 20-minute snack time and 50-minute lunch/recess time.

Monday, Feb. 18 – Friday, Feb. 22
9:00 am – 4:00pm

Children are grouped by grade in small groups no larger than 15 students. They stay with their group all day for the full week. In addition to our professional and experienced teachers and office staff, each group has an individual counselor who attends classes, snack, lunch and recess. February vacation arts classes at Arsenal Center for the Arts

The Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown offers February Vacation Art Workshops from February 19 – 22 for three age groups:  5 & 6 year olds, 7-10 year olds and 11+.  In Comics, Cartoons and Creative Creatures, students will use drawing, painting, clay and other media.  Younger students will create comics, cartoons and creative creatures; the older group will focus on graffiti art, t-shirts, hats and simple jewelry.

Full or half-day options available.  Morning classes run from 9:30AM – Noon.  Afternoon classes run from 12:30 – 3PM.
Supervised Lunch and Extended Day options are available.

Classes are held at the Arsenal Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street in Watertown, with free parking and access to public transportation.
Scholarships and Membership discounts are available.

Mobile Making Family Workshop Ages 10 & Up

Mobiles can add balance, movement, relaxation and beauty to any environment indoors or outdoors. Vladmir Barsukov combines his artistic skills and passion with his experience working as a scientist, physicist and mathematics professor. During this workshop whre science meets art, you will create beautiful, fun floating pieces and kinetic sculptures. All materials are provided. All levels welcome.

More than Hearts, Valentine Card Making Family Workshop
