Spots on the Newton Girls Ultimate Frisbee Team!

Mark Goodman and his daughter Sophie formed the Newton Girls Ultimate Frisbee team for middle school girls in 2013. The team had a successful season last Spring competing in 3 tournaments. Mark has played and taught Ultimate for 20+ years, and he looks forward to coaching the team again this Spring. There are a few roster spots open. If your daughter is interested in playing, please contact Mark at MGoodmanhome@gmail.com.

Who: Newton Girls in grades 5 – 8.
When: Sundays 4:00 – 6:00 pm. Practice begins on March 13th.
Where: TBD
What: The girls will learn to play Ultimate Frisbee. The team is tentatively playing in local tournaments in May and early June – and in Amherst on May 22nd.
How: If your daughter might be interested in playing, please contact Mark.
MGoodmanhome@gmail.com. The team will be limited to a max of 20 players.
Cost: $80. This fee covers field rental, insurance. Each player will receive their own disc (Frisbee).

Why: reasons to learn to play Ultimate
1. Ultimate teaches kids integrity in sports. There are no refs in Ultimate Frisbee. The players must learn the rules and make their own foul calls. In national championships there are observers who help make rulings on difficult calls – but no refs.
2. A player can be a receiver and quarterback on every play.
3. Ultimate teaches field spacing and cutting techniques that can be applied to other sports like soccer, lacrosse and basketball.
4. Ultimate is a lifetime sport. Virtually every major US city has adult leagues – and some (like Boston) now feature masters leagues for those over 40+ years of age.
5. There more than 700 colleges with Ultimate teams, and larger schools often field 2-3 teams grouped by skill level.

Whether your student relishes writing or struggles to find the right words, Summer Ink works.

Trained classroom teachers (4:1 ratio) give daily, targeted feedback as campers hone skills and find their unique voice. Two-week sessions at Simmons College in July. Scholarships are available to qualified families. Visit www.summerink.org for details and to register.

Music That Matters Summer Camp

Plugged In’s Music That Matters Summer Day Camp is for kids ages 11-18 and includes band class, songwriting, recording a song for a CD, music video, workshops, offsite events, and performance opportunities. Each session ends with a benefit concert that raises money for a charitable organization chosen by the students themselves. Plugged In provides a nurturing and supportive community to which young musicians feel a sense of belonging, an opportunity to express and be acknowledged for their musical interests and a chance to use their music to help others around the world.

Music That Matters Summer Day Camp meets Monday through Friday from 9:00-3:00 in two 2-week sessions from July 11th – 22nd and from July 25th – August 5th. Extended day is available. For more information, please visit http://www.pluggedinband.org/programs/summer-program/.

Founded in 2002, Plugged In now has over 160 students from all over Massachusetts. Some of our students experience emotional and learning difficulties, such as ADD, depression, and low-self-esteem and/or have special needs such as autism and Asperger’s Syndrome. In the loving and non-competitive atmosphere at Plugged In, all differences are transcended through a shared passion for music, the teamwork involved with using music to help others and an atmosphere of compassion and fun.
