Registration for NAA Youth Basketball (grades 3-12)

Registration opens Sept. 24th for the Newton Athletic Association (NAA) youth basketball leagues. Leagues are for boys and girls from 3rd through 12th grade. All players are welcome regardless of ability or experience. A mandatory evaluation clinic will be held on October 21 (make-up date on October 22) in order to create and balance the teams.

Season includes 10-12 games per league, played on either Saturdays or Sundays. Practices are one night each week, Sunday-Thursday. Program runs mid-November through id-March. Fee: $125 ($95 for each additional player from one family). Information and application online at www.naabasketball.org. Application deadline Oct. 20th.

Advertising Opportunity in the Bigelow Directory

Bigelow has a marketing opportunity for a limited time. Up until October 5^th, 2012, we will be taking advertisements for the publication of Bigelow’s Parent Teacher Directory. The directory, which includes approximately 630 students and faculty, is published each year. The directory lists the names and contact number for members of the Bigelow community. This is a unique opportunity to offer your services to your target market. Dollars raised go towards creative arts and sciences and technology for our school.

Bigelow Celebrates Walk-Bike-Bus to School Week and Collects Shoes for Kids in Need

In support of the environment and reducing traffic around our school, students are encouraged to walk, bike or take the bus to school (and home) as much as possible this coming week, October 1^st through October 5^th. This is an effort happening across the city and the world. In fact on Wednesday, millions of children from nearly 40 countries will be walking and biking to school in a show of support for keeping our communities safe for walking and biking. Thank you to the children riding the bus as they are doing their part in reducing car traffic near schools. Teachers will be surveying students this week to determine how many of our students walked/biked/bused to school.

The Watertown Children’s Theatre is offering a variety of classes — like Time Travels in Theatre — for children, grades 3-8.

All-City Orchestra Auditions, grades 4-8

Now celebrating its 54th season, the All-City Orchestra (ACO) is an after-school ensemble for kids who would like to play in an orchestra outside their own school boundaries. It is for kids in grades 4-8 who either attend the Newton Public Schools or who are home-schooled Newton residents. Students must already be dedicated participants in their own school group. Directed by Gregory Livingston (music teacher at Bigelow), the orchestra rehearses from 3:45 to 5:00 PM on Wednesday afternoons at Bigelow Middle School.

If you have a child who plays in his or her school orchestra and would like an additional challenge, the ACO may be just the thing. More details and audition requirements are on the ACO’s website.

Fun fall programs at Newton Community Farm

The Newton Community Farm is offering an array of fun programs for children of all ages — from cheese making and bread baking to Halloween at the farm. See a full schedule at the NCF’s website.

Newton Youth Summit, Oct. 11

Join 200 teens and adults at a Youth Summit, hosted by Mayor Setti Warren, to help parents and the larger community understand the challenges facing our teens, to have teens authentically express their experiences, and to coalesce as a community to support youth.

Thursday October 11 from 6 to 9 P.M.
Oak Hill Middle School, 130 Wheeler Road

200 adults and teens are expected to attend. The evening will include comments from teens and Mayor Warren, small group discussions, and an opportunity for all to express their opinion on the most pressing challenges and most significant opportunities for youth in Newton.
