Thank you to the School and Police

A thank you to the administration, staff and faculty at Bigelow Middle School, the Newton Police Department, and Newton Public Schools for responding to the events of last Friday in a prompt manner and for keeping our student’s safety your number one priority.

Coffee, Ice Cream, Dancing, and Bulbs!

What do these things have in common? They are all part of the upcoming events at Bigelow.

  • The school will be holding Open House events starting at 8:00 AM on October 13th, 14th and 15th for parents of Grades 6, 7 and 8, respectively. Come for coffee and stay for a tour.
  • The students in 6th grade will get a special treat on Friday, October 16th starting at 3:00 PM at the 6th Grade Ice Cream Social.  Click here for more information.
  • Parents of 6th graders will have a special day too – the 6th Grade Parent Orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28th starting at 7:00 PM. (Sorry, no ice cream…)
  • The first All-School Dance of 2015-2016 is planned for Friday, October 30th, starting at 6:30 PM.
  • Finally, as part of the Bigelow Beautification Project, there will be a Fall Clean-up and Bulb Planting extravaganza on Sunday, November 1st, from 10 AM to 2 PM. Please CLICK HERE to sign up and bring the whole family for a couple of hours or more. It will be wonderful for every child to see the fruits of her or his family’s labor every day when they come to school and especially when the flowers start blossoming next spring.

Super Supper Stroll – A few hosts still needed

We are still looking for a few more supper hosts, so if you have been thinking about it, please contact us today!!  The more the merrier!

Thank you to the wonderful Bigelow family for volunteering to host the Appetizer Party to kick off our evening.

The SUPER Supper Stroll (yes it has a new name and soup is optional) is a great way to get to know other Bigelow Parents while supporting programs that enhance our children’s education.

This super evening Stroll begins with the Appetizer Party. At this party, you will find out where and with whom you will share Supper. After Supper, our Stroll continues on to a surprise location for the Dessert Party.

You decide the Supper menu-can even be a theme (we can help if you need ideas) and the number of guests you can accommodate.

If you don’t want to cook but would like to Host, we have Chefs at the ready that will come to you!

Please contact Carolyn Judge at 617 794-6436~carolyncjudge@yahoo.com or Jessie Gilmartin at 617-281-4535~jessiekgilmartin@gmail.com for more information or to sign up to host.

For those who cannot Host…Make sure to SAVE THE DATE & line up a sitter so you can participate as a Guest!  Sign up to attend to follow later in October.

Thank you for Back to School Night

Thank you to all the teachers and staff that made Back to School Night possible.  It is a great evening and so valuable for parents / guardians to understand what their students will be doing this year.  Your preparation and commitment is so appreciated.

International Walk to School Day – This Wed

This coming Wednesday, October 7th  is International Walk to School Day.  Newton students will be joining children across the world who will be walking to school, celebrating their livable communities.  They walk because it is good for the environment, it makes them healthy, and they like walking with friends.  Walking also helps charge their brains and bodies for a good day of learning.

The Newton Safe Routes to School Task Force is a group of parents from across Newton working to increase the number of children walking and biking to school by making it safer and easier for them to do so.   Getting more kids walking and biking not only benefits students, it also significantly reduces the stress on streets throughout the city that are often congested with parents driving to school.
P.S..  In case you missed this, the US Surgeon General earlier this month put out a call to action to promote walking and to create more walkable communities in the effort to address the many health issues facing our country.  http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/library/calls/walking-and-walkable-communities/exec-summary.html
The Bigelow PTO is looking for someone to represent Bigelow on the Newton Safe Routes to School Task Force.  If you are interested, please email us at bigelowbulldog@gmail.com
